Do good by eating well
| | An exciting opportunity has arisen! Pizza Antica in Lafayette is sponsoring an evening of eating to raise funds for our Slow Food in Schools project. All you have to do is eat!
On the night of Tuesday, October 25, we want to pack the house and keep the phones buzzing with take out orders. When you either eat in or take out from Pizza Antica a percentage of your purchase will be donated to our Slow Food in Schools project. Just mention Slow Food Delta Diablo or Diablo Community Day School and your purchase will count.
The more people we can get to participate, the more funds we can raise for our amazing project. Growing Healthy Youth is a garden-to-table project at Diablo Community Day School (DCD) in Contra Costa County. DCD is an alternative middle and high school for students in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District who have been expelled from comprehensive schools in the district. In a sense, it is the last chance for these students to complete their education in the district. The school is a small learning community averaging 50 students in all grade levels.
Our project started in the fall of 2008 with the building of raised beds, importation of soil and compost and the installation of a timed irrigation system. Students at DCD were involved in all aspects of the garden creation. From the outset there were students who were enthusiastic and others who were not. However, over the course of the project, we have witnessed changes in the students' attitudes toward the garden and our weekly activities. It has been a valuable experience for everyone involved.
Please help us continue our work with these students! Thank you! Lesley Stiles and Stephanie Jacob
