  • Greetings!

The summer is in full swing! I hope that no matter how busy you are, you can find some vacation time along the way and enjoy some time with your family. We really enjoyed our recent trip to Charleston and have managed to spend family time together and with relatives in various places despite hectic summer travel schedules.

Wasn't it a great Independence Day? It was more than just fireworks and noisemakers for me. I visited my folks back in Brandon, Mississippi, watched the Space Shuttle launch, and caught up with my wife and kids!

    God Bless America!

P.S. Despite the clearly distressing working conditions, the fellow in that photo on the right somehow managed to survive working at a recent corporate event at the Coca-Cola Museum! (You can click on it to see the fullsize image.)

    July Shenanigans

The July performance of Shenanigans is coming up fast and needs your help! Please tell someone you know in the Atlanta area that this is a "don't miss" attraction - and was so named by a former mayor of the city! Click on the logo to go to the Zerve site for tickets, or click here to read some of the reviews!

Shenanigans is an event suitable for a wide range of attendees -- company or team outings, social clubs, small groups, or just folks out looking for unusual entertainment. Consider giving a pair of tickets to a client as a gift!

    Your support is so appreciated!

    Heading North...

After trips to Charleston, Los Angeles, Tennessee, Miami and Mississippi, I've had a couple of weeks at home to catch my breath. Next, a return engagement at Houdini's Close-Up Theatre at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, July 24 through 30.

At the end of that week, I'll make a brief detour north to New York to perform close-up magic at Monday Night Magic at St. Clement's Theatre. Monday Night Magic is New York's longest-running magic show, and it's a treat to get to perform there.

A Trick For You: Lunchtime Mindreader

Imagine that you are sitting at lunch with a friend. You select a number of small objects and arrange them randomly on the table. You ask your friend to think of any one of the objects, holding it in her mind. You pick up a pen or knife to use as a pointer. Your friend closes her eyes and holds your wrist as you randomly tap various objects on at a time with the pointer. She is to mentally spell the name of their object, one letter per tap, and to stop you when they have spelled her object. When she opens her eyes, she sees that you somehow ended on her mentally selected object!

This little demonstration of mindreading depends on two things: 1) your ability to choose objects which spell with a range of letters, and 2) your friend's ability to spell correctly. You need to choose objects which spell with varying numbers of letters. Here are some options:

    • 3 letters - cup, pen
    • 4 letters - salt, keys, menu
    • 5 letters - glass, knife, sugar, or plate
    • 6 letters - napkin, butter, pepper, wallet or saucer
    • 7 letters - ashtray, creamer, or Splenda
    • 8 letters - matchbox, license, house key
    • 9 letters - cell phone, cigarette, palmpilot
    • 10 letters - NutraSweet, BlackBerry
You set out a collection of objects that spell with each number of letters: a 3-letter object, a 4-letter object, and so on, as high as you wish to go. Arrange them randomly on the table, naming each item as you do so. After the person holds your wrist and you begin to tap, you tap slowly and ask the person to stop you -- without opening their eyes -- when they have completed spelling the object. For your first two taps, just tap any random objects - they won't really matter. Then on the third tap, tap the object that spells with 3 letters. On the fourth tap, you tap the object that spells with four letters, and so forth. You need to arrange them randomly so that when you move your hand back and forth while your friend holds your wrist, it feels like you are randomly choosing objects. When she stops you, you will automatically be on the correct object.

This is a rather simple mystery, and one which your friend may deduce on the first try. If you'd try it a second time, your friend will almost certainly catch on. It is a fun thing to share with a colleague or co-worker, and a good way to pass the time before lunch is served.

Applying this to a business communication setting isn't difficult. One idea would be to present it as a magic trick, without explanation, and segue into, "But you can't always depend on luck to deliver what the customer needs..."

Another possibility would be to use it to kick off a discussion of customer service methodologies or best practices. The idea is that the customer "magically" gets what they selected, but what really happens is careful planning and a smooth execution of a customer service process. You can teach your audience the trick, illustrating that it's the behind the scenes preparation that creates a "direct hit" experience for the customer. Have fun!
