Greetings! As this month draws to a close, I return to the FFFF Convention in New York for my third consecutive performance. Each time a magician is invited to perform there, they earn progressively more advanced "degrees." This year, I'm up for my PhD in Prestidigitational Performance! My one-man show Shenanigans continues its successful run here in Atlanta, and I'm booked to perform the early parlor shows at the Magic Castle June 12-18.
Onward and upward! ![]() Joe M. Turner
The February Shenanigans performance went extremely well. We took March off due to my schedule, but we picked it back up with an outstanding show on Tuesday, April 18 as I announced in a brief email blast right before the show. The next performance date is Thursday, May 25. Click on the logo above to purchase tickets, or click here to read the reviews that have come in from people who have already seen the show. I am still looking for additional locations -- in cities or towns anywhere in the Southeastern US. If you know a local community theatre manager or someone with access to another venue, please let me know and maybe we can work out a performance in your area. ![]()
![]() Believe it or not, I am actually about to perform a rather intriguing bit of magic for you! This is a trick that I have performed by phone, by email, and even over the radio. All you need to do is get a deck of cards and follow along with my instructions. Go get your cards and come back to the computer. Back already? Excellent! I'd like you to take any nine cards out of your deck. Set the rest of the deck aside -- we won't be needing it again. Mix up your 9 cards, then hold them in a neat packet in your hand so that the backs of the cards are uppermost. Lift up the top card and take a peek at it. This will be your card. You shuffled it to that position randomly, so there's no way I could know what it is. Put it back on top of the stack in your hand. Remember your card! Now, I want you to deal your cards in an unusual way. I would like you to spell your first name, dealing one card for each letter into a stack on the table. [As an example -- if your name is Bob, you'll deal three cards, one at a time, into a pile on the table to spell B - O - B.] When you finish spelling your name, drop the remaining packet of cards in your left hand onto the stack on the table. Now pick up the whole packet again and hold it in your hand. Now do the same thing, but spell my last name, "TURNER," dealing one card for each letter. When you're done, drop the remaining cards onto the stack and pick the whole packet up again. Since we're working with names, we're now going to use the name of your card. Your card has 3 names. The first name is the value (ace, two, king, etc.). I'd like you to spell the first name of your card, dealing one card for each letter. When you finish, drop the remaining cards on the stack and pick them all up again. All cards have the same middle name: "Of." Spell the word "OF" and then drop the remaining cards onto the stack. Pick them all up again. Your card's last name is the suit: clubs, hearts, spades or diamonds. Spell your card's last name, then drop the remaining cards on top. Pick up the stack. You have mixed the cards up based on your name, my name, and the name of the card you chose. Slide off the top card and hold it in your hand. Nope, that's not it... you can set it down. Try it with the second card. Hold it... no, that's not it either. Hold the third card in your hand -- that is definitely not your card. Hold up the fourth card -- that's still not it. Do you still remember your card? Hold the fifth card in your hand. Say the name of your card out loud. Turn over the card in your hand! My friend Jim Steinmeyer, a fantastic illusion designer and consultant on magic for Broadway and West End theatrical productions, invented this extremely clever trick and gave me permission to perform it for you. Thanks, Jim! ![]()
