Greetings! Aloha! I am currently sitting in the Honolulu airport, awaiting an interisland flight to Maui. I've spent the last few days performing and meeting with prospects here in Oahu, and I'll be doing a bit more of the same in Maui over the next week before returning to Atlanta. This newsletter will therefore be slightly abbreviated. I hope your summer has brought you success and a moment or two of relaxation as well. My clients are my best advertisers and are an integral part of my business. I appreciate your support and referrals! I encourage you to share this newsletter with your colleagues and encourage them to subscribe. I'll continue to provide links to interesting and useful tools I find online, as well as describing how I can add a touch of mystery to your meetings and events. Mahalo! ![]() Joe M. Turner
The end of July brought a fantastic opportunity to perform at the Manoa Valley Theatre in Honolulu, Hawaii. Magician Monty Witt, a colleague whom I've met at various conventions over the last several years, invited me to perform on the annual magic program he produces at the theatre. It was a lovely show and I really appreciated the invitation -- thanks, Monty! After getting back to Atlanta, I'll turn around and leave for Atlantic City where I'll be performing from August 15-21. The remainder of August does include some local performances, which means I'll get to sleep in my own bed for a change! Have a wonderful August!
Some months ago, I shared a link to Google Maps with you. Google Maps is still the best mapping program I've found online. Google Earth, however, takes the idea to a whole new level! Google Earth is a free application that you can download from the Google Earth website. Once installed, you can type in an address or location - anywhere on earth -- and you will zoom into that address starting from outer space. As you zoom in, various satellite images are smoothly streamed from the Google Earth servers, giving you an amazing experience. Once zoomed in, you can adjust the tilt of the view to provide a detailed look at the area's topology. You can tour anyplace on earth using this tool. Look for the pyramids in Egypt, go to to the top of Mount Everest, or explore buildings in Washington, DC. You can see people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial! Planning a trip or meeting to a specific place? Use Google Maps and Google Earth to preview the spot and plan transportation and activities! (Plus, it's a lot of fun to play with!)
This month I'm going to show you a trick that you can experience rather than perform. The Flash Mind Reader is a "psychic" web site that apparently senses which of a selection of symbols you are focusing on. Click here to visit the mind reader. If you have been receiving this email newsletter since January, you may recognize some of what's happening here. The first trick I shared with you is based on a similar principle. (If you haven't received all the newsletters, check the archive here.) What about an application? In a similar vein as other mind reading tricks, you could spin a presentation of this effect to discuss the anticipation of trends or responses of a given target audience. It may be just as useful, however, as a change of pace in the course of a day-long conference or training session. Having something interesting to share with your audience when the energy level has dropped can be an effective way to take a collective mental "coffee break" and refocus afterward. Also, don't discount the value of having a neat "toy" to share as a giveaway or handout. Enjoy this change of pace from our regular lesson! I'll be back next month with another teach-a-trick.
