Fundraising in the Current Economic Climate: Is Your Glass Half Empty or Half Full?
As I travel around the country-and as individuals from around the country come to campus-it has become increasingly clear that, as far as fundraising and development is concerned, we live in interesting times.
About a year ago, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reached bottom. Fifteen months ago, Bernard Madoff was arrested. Eighteen months ago, Lehman Brothers, the global financial services firm, collapsed. By all indications, current realities reflect the worst economy since the Great Depression.
According to a report from the Conference Board, a private research group, U.S. consumer confidence plunged 10.5 points in February 2010, raising concerns about the outlook for consumer spending. The Russians Are Here! GPG Funds Hornstein Scholars
This fall, Hornstein welcomed its first Brandeis-Genesis Institute (BGI) fellows. BGI is a program designed to train Russian-speakers to serve in leadership positions in the Jewish community. Our new students, Svetlana Muterperel from Moscow (pictured), Judah (Vlad) Khaykin from San Francisco, and Dmitry Levin from New York City, are uniquely suited to become effective leaders, strengthened by Jewish knowledge, insight into the Russian Jewish community, and a commitment to the future of the Jewish people.
Established in 2009 with generous funding from the Genesis Philanthropy
Group, the Brandeis-Genesis Institute provides financial support,
mentoring, special programming, specialized support and related
activities to Russian-speaking Jewish students at Brandeis University.
If you know a qualified, Russian-speaking candidate, please encourage them to apply for this prestigious, fully-funded fellowship! Contact Rise Singer, Hornstein Program Manager, at 781-736-2991 or rsinger@brandeis.edu for more information.

Foster Seminar 2009/2010
Our 25 current Hornstein students recently returned from an extraordinary ten day seminar in Israel. Planned by the students with the participation of faculty members, this intense and rewarding program included a rich itinerary of speakers and site visits designed to expose the group to various expressions of identity in Israel, and to issues concerning the relationship between the Diaspora and Israel. The Foster Seminar in Israel on Contemporary Jewish Life, now offered on an annual basis in partnership with the Jewish Community Center Association (JCCA) in Israel, has been a cornerstone of the Hornstein Program's curriculum for 30 years.
