Dear Alumni & Friends,
Like everyone in the Jewish world, we have been
focused on the economy this fall. All around us, needs are up and means are
down. We are deeply aware of the pain and challenges that have come to many
Jewish institutions and families, Brandeis
University included. Here
at Hornstein we have tightened our budgets and our belts, while preserving our
crucial mission to educate and create the strong Jewish leaders that our Jewish
future requires. [read more] |

We want you to help recruit.... Len Saxe
Inevitably, when I give a presentation or visit a Jewish
organization, I encounter Hornstein alumni. Our alumni may be only 600 strong, but they are ubiquitous in the ranks
of Jewish professionals. As Chair of Admissions, I would like to call on our
alumni to help us recruit another cohort of Jewish professional leaders. The curriculum may have changed since you
were at Hornstein, and there are a number of new faces on the faculty, but our
commitment to providing cutting-edge training for Jewish leaders is unwavering.

Orientation 2008
As the summer came to a close, the incoming
first-year class came together with returning students, faculty and staff for a
two-day orientation retreat at Camp

on the upcoming academic year. [ read more]

When
the fall term began in HRNS 241a, the required course in Skills and Techniques

extraordinary undergraduates-who someday may be Hornstein students,
themselves-began a semester-long journey through the basics of annual fund
development. [read more] |
Welcome Yehuda Kurtzer, Bronfman Chair
My appointment as the inaugural Bronfman Chair
in Jewish Communal Innovation has been a total whirlwind, and although I have
been on campus for a few months I feel myself just starting to settle in.
Although the Bronfman Chair primarily seeks to facilitate the writing of a
book, it also brings with it the welcome advantages of joining the Hornstein
community; and as such, I am grateful for this opportunity to introduce myself
to Hornstein program alumni and friends.[read more] |
Kaplan Seminar 2008
The Kaplan Seminar for Emerging Professionals cultivates
leadership talent for the Jewish community. The program is coordinated by
Dr. Amy Sales, Director of the Fisher-Bernstein Institute for Jewish Philanthropy
and Leadership at Brandeis
University and a
professor in the Hornstein Program. Designed for outstanding Jewish leaders with five to
ten years of professional experience in the Jewish community, the seminar
builds managerial and leadership capabilities, roots them in Jewish tradition,
and provides professionals with much-needed time for learning, reflection, and
renewal. [read more] |

Jewish Summer Camps on My Mind Joe Reimer
Having a sabbatical year is one of the true joys of academic
life. You might want to hear about the travel my wife and I took to far-off
places like New Zealand, Australia and Bali,
but that is for another time. Today I want to share some of the writing I did
on Jewish summer camps.[read more]
