A strategy to prevent colds & flu

By Dr. Albert F. Robbins D.O.,MSPH Dr Robbins

These proven wellness tips can  strengthen your immune system, helping you combat the many viruses you may encounter this season:

  1. Take extra vitamin D, up to 5000 units daily. Low vitamin D levels make one more susceptible to viruses.
  2. Take turmeric supplements at the first sign of inflammation. Turmeric (or Meriva-SR, a curcumin preparation derived from turmeric) is a natural anti-inflammatory.
  3. Have a daily lifestyle plan to minimize your reaction to stress that includes a healthy diet, an exercise program, and adequate rest. Don't exhaust yourself or you'll be more susceptible to viruses.
  4. Go for fresh air walks daily, or exercise at home or gym. Do some yoga daily. Try to get fresh air every day.
  5. Wash your hands frequently and don't share foods or drinks with others.
  6. Don't smoke cigarettes, cigars, or marijuana.
  7. Avoid binging on sweets.
  8. Follow a healthy Mediterranean diet.
  9. Take a comprehensive probiotic (such as Therbiotic by Klaire) daily.
  10. Take selenium 200 mcg (such as Selenomet) daily. It improves immune function.
  11. Use fish oils daily or eat more fresh ocean fish; vegetarians should find other sources of omega-3s.
  12. Take 1000 mg to 3000 mg vitamin C powder or capsules daily.
  13. Take Zinc Supreme, a specially formulated preparation. Zinc is the master mineral for immune protection.
  14. Avoid smelly fragrances and fabric softeners.
  15. Use more ginger, curry, and garlic in cooking. If you choose to take the regular flu shot it may partially protect against the H1N1flu virus.

Have a happy, healthy winter!
