A strategy to prevent colds & flu
|
By
Dr. Albert F. Robbins D.O.,MSPH
These proven wellness tips can strengthen your immune system, helping you
combat the many viruses you may encounter this season:
- Take
extra vitamin D, up to 5000 units daily. Low vitamin D levels make one
more susceptible to viruses.
- Take
turmeric supplements at the first sign of inflammation. Turmeric (or
Meriva-SR, a curcumin preparation derived from turmeric) is a natural
anti-inflammatory.
- Have
a daily lifestyle plan to minimize your reaction to stress that includes a
healthy diet, an exercise program, and adequate rest. Don't exhaust
yourself or you'll be more susceptible to viruses.
- Go
for fresh air walks daily, or exercise at home or gym. Do some yoga daily.
Try to get fresh air every day.
- Wash
your hands frequently and don't share foods or drinks with others.
- Don't
smoke cigarettes, cigars, or marijuana.
- Avoid
binging on sweets.
- Follow
a healthy Mediterranean diet.
- Take
a comprehensive probiotic (such as Therbiotic by Klaire) daily.
- Take
selenium 200 mcg (such as Selenomet) daily. It improves immune function.
- Use
fish oils daily or eat more fresh ocean fish; vegetarians should find
other sources of omega-3s.
- Take
1000 mg to 3000 mg vitamin C powder or capsules daily.
- Take
Zinc Supreme, a specially formulated preparation. Zinc is the master
mineral for immune protection.
- Avoid
smelly fragrances and fabric softeners.
- Use
more ginger, curry, and garlic in cooking. If you choose to take the
regular flu shot it may partially protect against the H1N1flu virus.
Have a happy, healthy winter!
