A NEW SCHOOL FOR KOMPONG SPEU

Help them on their path to a brighter future

 June 2008

DEAR SPONSORS DONORS, FAMILY AND FRIENDS,

Our dream for a school for the children of Kompong Speu Orphan Center is becoming a reality.

In our April, 2008 newsletter, we announced the hiring of one full-time and one part-time teacher as another important step in our commitment to an English language pilot program at Kompong Speu Orphan Center. Our pilot program is now running, the curriculum has been developed, books purchased, and the school children are studying in their makeshift classroom. We will be breaking ground on the new school this summer and we ask you for your generous support of this exciting and important project.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

WALL OF GRATITUDE
For a donation of $100 or more, your honoree will be included on the Wall of Gratitude on the new school building.  This is a truly unique opportunity to support the children and honor your loved ones. Placing the name of a child, your family, your company or organization, or a dedication to a loved one's memory on this wall provides an enduring tribute to the honoree.

CLASSROOM NAMING SUPPORT
You can name a classroom with a donation of $10,000 or more with special recognition. One classroom remains available for a naming opportunity.

HOW TO DONATE
Your check payable to Cambodia Tomorrow can be mailed to:

WHY BUILD AN ENGLISH AND COMPUTER SCHOOL?

I cannot emphasize enough the significance of the hiring of our two teachers and opening our temporary school. This spring I spent seven days in Cambodia and visited Kompong Speu while Cambodia Tomorrow Board members Elizabeth and Michelle were still there at the end of their 10-month Cambodia immersion. One thing that struck me was Phnom Penh is showing signs of economic vibrancy.  The children of Kompong Speu will not be able to participate fully in Cambodia's recovery unless they learn the skills, including proficiency with the English language, that are necessary to secure a good job when they leave the orphanage.  This welcome economic recovery comes at a price - rising inflation, which has made our supporting the children at the same level a real challenge without your continued generous support.

Thank you on behalf of children,

Joe (Bo) Zawadsky,
Cambodia Tomorrow

With an ever-growing population in excess of 70 children, we want to create the best possible and sustainable learning environment, staffed by Cambodia Tomorrow-recruited and professionally trained teaching staff. Building and operating an English language school, with several classrooms directly on the grounds of Kompong Speu, provides educational opportunities that are the cornerstone of our organization's work.

A dedicated school on the orphan center grounds will also provide high quality small-group English language training, with a central emphasis on oral proficiency and written expression.  These foundational skills are necessary for the children's empowerment and employment when they begin their adult lives outside of the orphanage.

The estimated start-up cost of the school, including construction, is over $40,000.  With the rapidly rising cost of materials in Cambodia, and the rainy season approaching, we are starting the construction now.  We hope to have the school construction completed by August.
