MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
by Susan Pickering

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Pickering

To All EWGA LI Chapter Members:

I want to thank you for your approval and I look forward to serving the Long Island Chapter for the 2012 year.  I give a special thank you to our Past President Jackie Meli-Rizzo, and all the amazing women who have served over the years on the EWGALI Board, our Chairs and our committee volunteers; we could not have done it without you all!

Sadly, some of our Board Chairs have moved on this year; careers, term limits (yes, we have them) and life beckon. We thank these wonderful women for their service and dedication to our chapter; Sandrina Devlopoulos (Membership), Suzanne Garcia (Rules & Handicap), Carolee Mancuso (Treasurer), Lynne Nordone (Social Events), and Theresa Oropallo (Golf Education & Player Development), it was a privilege to work with you.

Our EWGA golf season is over, but the work continues and in a few weeks your new board will meet to start planning for 2012.  I am excited about the new Board and they have lots of ideas, but we will need your help to make our dreams a reality. Part of the mission of EWGA is personal development, we encourage our members to step up and try on roles they may not have done before but want to learn more about. 11 years ago, I had never even touched a golf club! EWGA has been a life changing experience and I have grown personally and professionally through my EWGA volunteer experiences.

As a volunteer organization, we are always looking to our members for leadership, however we also have to be mindful of the fact that we are volunteers and as such, we are taking this year as an opportunity to reorganize the Board, realign the Chair positions and ultimately build stronger committees, so that when a Chair steps up, she has a strong team to support her and the chapter.

You are the EWGA,  and I look forward to meeting you and working with you in 2012. I want to hear from you, what do you want, how can we be better and how will you help us do it?

I hope you will join us on December 7th at our annual Holiday Party at Westbury Manor, it will be a night to celebrate and thank our volunteers, ring in the holiday season and give back to the community with a donation to Toys for Tots.  Watch your e-mail for the invitation!

Thank you,

Susan Pickering

EWGA Long Island at Cold Spring Country Club

The EWGA LI Chapter ordered up a breathtakingly beautiful day for the Cold Spring Country Club outing held on October 17

th, 2011. The day couldn't have been more spectacular for the 118 members and guests who came out to play! There was crispness to the air and the faint, earthy scent of falling leaves. Nothing but blue skies overhead and an occasional cool breeze, from which the autumn sun provided some warmth. The gold, red and orange leaves rustled across the lush green fairways, against the backdrop of Oheka Castle. What a spectacular day for golf!

Prior to heading out to tee off, the ladies enjoyed a delicious assortment of brunch specialties and then set out to practice on the driving range and shop in the Pro Shop. For the first time in a long time, the Chapter hosted a putting contest and more than forty ladies participated. The lucky winner was Lisa Lally, who received a $70 gift certificate redeemable for merchandise in the Cold Spring Country Club's Pro Shop, which was well stocked with a fine selection of ladies' apparel, shoes and clubs. Next time you happen to be in the area, plan to stop into the Pro Shop which is open to the public.

The winners of the Longest Drive Contest were 24.9 handicap and below: Sharon Kaler and for 25 handicap and above: Barbara Stahl.

Closest to the Pin Contests winners were 24.9 handicap and below: Patty Ellis, and 25 handicap and above: Robin Brendell.

Our Land on the Green Contest winner received a $100 Gift certificate for Tanger's Outlets in Deer Park.

Prizes were awarded for Best Ball and Scramble Teams. Best Ball Low Gross winning team: May Tong, Davis Tong, Jeannette LaBarb, & Roberta Schwartz.  Best Ball Low Net winning team: Liz Rye, Terry Wolters, Vivien Schecter & Jackie Meli-Rizzo.  Winning Scramble 3 person team: Doreen MacFarlane, Nancy Crowe & Tracy Dellomo. Winning Scramble 4 person team: Robin Brendell, Brent Pellow, Ann Stecker & Leda Malaga.

Play got underway at Noon. As the day continued, you could spot several groups doing the "Birdie Dance" (mine included!) and high fiving each other for great shots made. The Club served up a delicious BBQ launch on the course (as if we didn't have enough to eat at brunch!). There were several contests on the course: Hole in One, Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin, as well as a Land on the Green Contest hosted by Tanger's Outlets, one of our sponsors.

After golf, the players retreated to the Clubhouse for cocktails and shared the details of their day with friends. Following cocktails, the players headed in to the main ballroom for a delicious dinner and more great conversation with friends. The winning Best Ball teams, Scramble teams and contest winners were announced as well as the drawing prize winners. On a side note, after all these years, Liz Weber finally won a drawing prize!

A very special thanks to the BEST GOLF EVENTS COMMITTEE ever!!!!!: Liz Rye, Bella Bekker-Silver, Sue Foehrenbach, Carole DiPaola, Wendy Wansor, Alice Miller, May Tong, Jill Korman, Linda Risi, Helen Ferro, Lorraine Bocci, Doreen Macfarlane, Vivian Zaffuto, Maddy Cangemie, Kelly LaLuna & Barbara Bartoszak. Thank you for your strong support and dedication throughout the years!!!!

Save the DATE: Mark your calendars for 2012 as the Club was so nice to reserve a date for us!!! JULY 23rd, 2012 is the date for next year's outing at Cold Spring Country Club. And while you have your 2012 calendars out, be sure to mark September 13th for the 2012 Outing at Glen Head Country Club.

It's been a great year and I have truly enjoyed serving as EWGA LI's Golf Events Chair!

See you on the Fairway!

Like Our Golf Season, End of Season Party Over Too Soon

Maureen MahoneyAt this year's End of Season Dinner, Maureen Mahoney, EWGALI League Chair, welcomed and congratulated us on another successful golfing season, explained a different format for this year's event  and announced, "Let's get this party started", and without a moment's hesitation, it did!

The video screens on either side of the banquet hall captured all of our golf course highlights and presented winners in all categories of play, while we chatted, exchanged stories, and of course ate and toasted each other one more time.  The speeches were short and sweet, and you guessed right, it was time again to resume the party and get up on the dance floor.

The evening continued with more thanks and raffle prizes and punctuated throughout with dance breaks, with all demonstrating their dancing talents.   Those EWGALI Members do have fun golfing and dancing, and the evening was over much too soon.

         IT WAS A FANTASTIC YEAR!

     CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF

              THIS YEAR'S WINNERS!

SPONSOR EVENT

EWGA LI CHAPTER SUPPORTING LI WOMEN

The Fortune 52 Event, honoring Long Island Women who make a significant, unique and lasting  contribution to their communities and workplaces brought out the masses,  there was networking and most importantly EWGALI  was there to celebrate, introduce and further our mission!

Michele and Barbara at Fortune 52 Event

The EWGA LI Chapter Booth shared the spotlight, and the glory with other sponsors as we took the opportunity to educate the Fortune 52 attendees about the EWGA Mission: connecting women to learn,
play and enjoy golf for business and for fun.

EWGA LI Chapter Volunteers Spread the News at Fortune 52 Event
Our Diamond Sponsor, Tanger Outlets invited us to hear the many stories of how these Women connected to the causes that they now lead.  Brittany Rostron founded Project Sage Horse Rescue, while Terry Sears is leading Tuesday's Children, and Kathleen Flynn-Bisson founded and is directing KFB Prevention Through the Arts.  Kathy Liguori owns TuTor Time of Medford & Middle Island, Joanne Hutchins founded Moms Who Kick, and Joyce Glicker and Carol Ryder presented individualized expertise and knowledge.

And now the work begins to followup with the many who stopped by to learn more about membership in EWGALI, those who showed an interest in volunteering or becoming a sponsor.

Thank you again, Beverly Fortune for the invite and see you next year!
