MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
by Jackie Meli-Rizzo

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Jackie Meli-Rizzo

Message from the President-

As the slate for the EWGALI 2012 elections was just sent out to the members, I can not help but think back to the last two years that I have had the honor to serve as President of this active and special EWGA chapter.  I would like to extended my sincere thanks to the entire Board for all of their hard work and the many contributions they made for another successful season.  We have spent hours upon hours at our monthly board meetings to bring the chapter the best programs we possibly can.

Special thanks to out League Chair Maureen Mahoney who did an amazing  job running the leagues for 2011 and hosting the End of League Dinner.  It was a nice change and I think everyone enjoyed it.  It was a true celebration of another great season of Long Island Leagues and it great seeing our members have so much fun.  I would like to thank Susan Blohm, the End of Season Coordinator who has been helping the leagues chairs for 7 years run this event, also Laura Ewall for the music. I, as well as the chapter thank and appreciate all the hours the league volunteers have spent communicating with the members, making tee times and servicing their needs.  It takes 41 volunteers to run the leagues and one special person to lead them, thank you Maureen.

I also would like to thank our sponsors who have supported us through the years.  It has been great working with you.

And last but not least I would like to thank the members for coming back every year, renewing their memberships and taking advantage of what EWGA Long Island has to offer.

As the fall approaches, we still have plenty of golf and I look forward to seeing you all at the Holdiay Event, December 7 at the Westbury Manor!

And again, thank you for the honor as serving as your President for the past two years,

Jackie Meli-Rizzo

President

EWGA LI 's GLEN HEAD INVITATIONAL OUTSTANDING!

Hole In one

Despite the unfavorable weather that decided to show its face a few times to those playing at EWGA LI's Glen Head Invitational on September 15, a good time was had by all!

Chris Sedlacek and her Golf Events Committee put together a fun filled day for the 108 golfers who attended the event. After checking in at the registration desk, the ladies enjoyed a magnificent brunch - everything one could possibly enjoy from made to order omelets, crepe suzettes, endless salad bar fixings, French toast, pastries, fruits,....you name it...it was at the brunch.

The ladies played in two formats: Best ball and Scramble. Each group was accompanied by a Caddy who provided guidance with respect to the course, especially on the putting green. A BBQ lunch was offered at the ninth hole and grilled chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs were grilled up for the ladies to grab a quick bite while heading off to the tenth hole.

The course was spectacular - challenging yet exciting for all who played. The fairways were in great shape and the putting greens were sweet.

Although the weather was fine for most of the day and we even saw the sun, there were scatted rain showers. However, that didn't dampen the spirits of the ladies. In fact, I don't think anyone one realized rain was falling! Throughout the day, you would hear laughter resonating across the course and cheers and applause whenever great shots were made. If you were playing close to Clara Goldberg's threesome, you might have heard some loud screams as Clara made a Hole in One on Hole #16!!!!!!!! According to the Pro at Glen Head, Clara's Hole in One was the first this season for the Club! Congratulations Clara!!!!

The other winners of the day:

Low Gross Best Ball with a score of 68 : Ellen Toritto, Eileen Maguire, Maureen Mahoney & Lori Paisano

Low Net Best Ball with a score of 72: Tina Panos, Jane Delgado, Janet Amodie & Patty Elis

Scramble Team 1st Place: May Tong, Cathy Cole, Karen Dowd & Patty Wilson

Scramble Team 2nd Place by a match of cards and a score of 71 : Anne O'Brien, Jane Upton, Debra Quinn, 7 Mary Hafele from a neighboring EWGA Chapter.

Closest to the Pin Contest on Hole #12 : Maureen Mahoney (24.9 index and below category) and Doreen Macfarlane (25 index and above category)

Longest Drive Contest on Hole # 18 : Dawn Tenny (24.9 index and below) and Barbara Stahl (25 index and above)

After 18 holes of golf, the ladies had a chance to chat about their round over cocktails in the lovely grill room of the Club.   An incredible spread of food was once again laid out for everyone to enjoy - pasta stations, carving stations, cheese trays, etc........ The ladies also placed their drawing prize tickets in the respective gift bags that they hoped to win. After some nice conversations and catching up, the group moved to the ballroom for - yes - more food! A delicious spread of assorted dinner buffets was on display for the ladies to feast upon.

Once dinner was underway the program started and the evening got underway. Before the winners were announced, everyone sang Happy Birthday to Suzanne Garcia, EWGA LI's Rules & Handicap Chair.

EWGA LI is very appreciative of the wonderful staff at Glen Head who made the day a huge success. It sounds as if EWGA has already secured a date for next year - September 13th, so mark that on your calendars!

Chris Sedlacek would like to thank the following people on her committee who worked on the Glen Head event: Sue Foehrebach, Carole DiPaola, Jill Kornman, Liz Rye, Bella Bekker Silver, Vivian Zaffuto, Maddy Cangemie, Barbara Bartoszak, Doreen Macfarlane, Lorraine Bocci, and Linda Risi.

Thank you everyone for a great day! See you at the EWGA LI Cold Spring Country Club Outing on October 17th!

LEAGUES

by Maureen Mahoney

WHERE DOES THE TIME GO?

As always, the Summer has flown by and we are all wondering how September has come and gone. Another league season has ended, but not before our members played many great rounds of golf all across Long Island. We had our tournament winners, of course, but there were also many individual milestones that marked the beginner's first signs that the practice was paying off, or the veteran player's reward for persevering when the finer points of the game seemed so elusive, or the accomplished player's first chance to show her golf skills outside EWGA.

The Cantiague league reported many of these individual milestones. Evor Ingram, Cathy Lupo and Stacey Schwamb all had their first pars ever while playing there, and brand new golfer Mary Ann DeRienzo had her first chip-in.   At Harbor Links Executive, Carrie Mannix had a most impressive chip-in eagle on the par 4 eighth hole. Joyce Mullen and Nancy Foran-Pinzon both broke 60 for the first time at Peninsula.  Over in Suffolk, Cathy Vereline scored her first birdie ever while playing at Heatherwood.   At Wind Watch, Pat Lane broke 50 for the first time, scoring 46 for 9 holes. Jeanne Ryniker carded a 42, her lowest score ever, and Laura Ewall opened the League Championship Tournament with a 38, her first score under 40. Last but not least, Liz Rye, who spent most of the league season working on her backswing, won a Bronze Medal for golf at the World Police and Fire Games.

Congratulations to these members and to all of you who came out this season striving to improve your games.
