MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
by Jackie Meli-Rizzo

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Jackie Meli-Rizzo

Message from the President-

I hope you are all enjoying the summer with all that the EWGA Long Island Chapter has to offer.  The leagues are in full swing thanks to the hard work of Maureen Mahoney and her league committee. Clinics are rolling out and the popular "I've Never Been to an Outing Outing"  was a great success in thanks to Theresa Orapollo and the Golf Education and Player Development Committee.  We come off the heels of the outing at the Greens at Melville and another one is around the corner at Cold Spring Harbor.  Chris Sedlacek and the Golf Events Committee have that all under control.  We just had our Chapter Championship and congratulations to the overall Chapter Champion Yong Park three time champion.  Our sucessful championship was run by Ellen Cohen and her committee of Chris Sedlacek, Suzanne Garcia, Patrice Franco and Maureen Mahoney.  Thanks for all your hard work to put forth a championship that allows our ladies to compete in the largest amateur competition in the world.

To continue on the competitive golf front, both Patrice Franco and Janet Mallon ran another Presient's Cup and the red "Franco" team finally won.  They are also very busy preparing for the Sound Cup and the Champions Cup.

On the networking front Laura Palker put together a networking event as part of the annual Albert's Mandarin Gourmet Golf Classic and our sponsor Golftec put together another EWGA night with a complimentary Swing Analysis, drinks and snacks for all members who attended.

So I guess you all can see what EWGA Long Island offers and I hope you are taking advantage of it all!!!

Enjoy the summer and good luck in the League Championship.

EWGA LI 's MEET & MINGLE; A HUGE SUCCESS!

the greens collage

When planning an EWGA LI Golf Outing, there are three things that you keep your fingers and toes crossed for :  that everyone will have an enjoyable day, pace of play will be strong and the weather will cooperate.   For the EWGA LI Meet & Mingle held on June 20th at The Greens in Melville Golf Course, all three things worked out very well.  Based on the smiles and laughter that were evidenced all day, it appeared the 66 ladies who came out to play in the event had a wonderful time.

According to Terry Wolters,  "This is by far the best Golf Outing!  The course is wonderful, the food is great and it's so much fun!"

The theme for the event was "FLOWER POWER!"  But no one had to be told what the theme was, as there were obvious telltale signs everywhere! There were multi-colored tissue paper flowers on every golf cart, flower shaped balloons everywhere you looked, a florally decorated cart program, flowered golf flag centerpieces, flowered golf cart signs, floral decorated drawing prizes and each foursome had the name of a flower on their name tags!  Members and their guests also showed off their floral fashion attire very creatively and those who went above and beyond were recognized with a special trophy! The overall florally fashion winner was Vivian Zaffuto.

After enjoying a lovely brunch, the ladies headed out to play 18 holes on the very well maintained, extremely women-friendly and well manicured golf course.  There were several Closest to the Pin Contests, Longest Drive contests and a few fun holes where players could only use one club from tee to green.  On another hole, no putters were allowed.  You had to get creative with one of your other clubs to put the ball in the hole.  A lot of laughs were had and a good time was had by all.

The Closest to the Pin Contest winners : Bobbie Turner (<24), Barbara Bartoszak (25+), Stella Klepper (<24) and Barbara Hoffman (25+).

The Longest Drive Contest winners : Maureen Mahoney (<24 ; 2 holes), Carmela Murphy(25+) & Frances Motolla (25+).

Best Ball/Scramble team winners :

Best Ball Low Gross team : Frances Mottola, Liz Rye, Vivien Schecter & Terry Wolters.

Best Ball Low Net team: Barbara Bartoszak, Barbara Gil, Lenore Graham, & Theresa Oropallo

Scramble Team : Denise Leto, Kitty Leno, Jean Pascale & Barbara Hoffman

Upon returning to the Clubhouse for cocktails & dinner, the ladies feasted on various passed hors d'oeuvres while looking over the drawing prizes and making their selections.  A lovely assortment of drawing prizes was on hand; one prize was nicer than the next, which made it hard to decide which prizes you wanted to take a chance on! Several sponsors provided some of the grand prizes such as a Hot Tub Weekend from the Hot Tub Factory.  Chick on the Go provided an outfit and Tangers offered several gift cards.

The dinner buffet included a delicious fresh seafood spread set out on a larger-than-life ice sculpture of the EWGA logo.  There was  filet mignon and turkey at the carving station, grilled vegetables, various cheeses, pastas and salad plus much more!

A very special THANK YOU to the Golf Events Committee whose tremendous efforts made the day a huge success! Liz Rye, Wendy Wansor, Carole DiPaola, Sue Foehrenbach, Vivian Zaffuto, Alice Miller, Jill Kornman, Helen Ferro, Lorraine Bocci, Barbara Bartoszak, & Annamarie Gargan-Caerbert.

See you at the next outing at Cold Spring Country Club on August 15th.!

LEAGUES

by Maureen Mahoney

THE HIGHLIGHTS OF A SEASON - IT WAS A WILD START...

 Foggy Morning at Harbor Links

Foggy Morning at Harbor Links

The first month of league play presented some environmental challenges.   Nassau Match Play faced a frost delay and a fog delay in its opening weeks.   The Travel League was enveloped in clouds of bright green pollen during an event in the pine barrens.   Eisenhower played under a tornado watch, and almost all leagues contended with torrential rain.   At Wind Watch, as usual, the ladies did not let two rain outs in three weeks interrupt their socializing; they all just skipped right to the 19th hole.

The volatile Spring weather has finally settled down, and fleece jackets and rainwear have given way to Summer ensembles. At Calverton Links, Susan "Palm Beach" Blohm was resplendent in her pink and white, but the rest of her foursome thought she was a bit too "matchy."

Now that the fog has lifted, the clouds have parted, and the temperatures have soared, the leagues are off to a strong start.  Several tournaments are already in the books and many players are piling up the birdies and chip-ins.   Thanks to the 14 Scoring Captains who are keeping track of the hundreds of scores turned in each week, we will be able to recognize tournament winners and special achievements at our End of Season Celebration on September 26.   We would like to celebrate the accomplishments of all of our members, not just tournament winners, so please let your league volunteers know if you have achieved any personal milestones, e.g. first birdie, first time scoring under 60 for 9 holes, etc.  Even if you are just enjoying your time on the course with friends, send us some photos, or amusing anecdotes.

The long days of Summer are the best times for our afternoon leagues. I hope you all enjoyed this special time of year.
