MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Jackie Meli-Rizzo

Message from the President-

The Long Island Chapter is in full swing since its kick off in March.  Nineteen members and board members attended the 20th Anniversary EWGA  Annual Conference at Amelia Island.  The chapter won top honors with the highest retention in Division I - 72% retention.  That was great news especially when you take into consideration the size of our chapter.

The social committee led by Lynne Nordone hosted the Spring New Member Networking Social at the Hamlet in Commack.  It was an informative evening for new members who had a chance to direct their questions to the panel of board & committee members.  The well-attended clinics run by Theresa Oropallo have begun at several venues.  Suzanne Garcia had the first Rules and Etiquette Seminar which is always a great night. Maureen Mahoney, the League Chair started the evening delivering some crucial League Play  information specifically for new members.   Janet Amodie presented the etiquette portion of the night and Suzanne capped off the evening with a review of the Rules of Golf.  The 14 leagues - yes 14 this year - are run by Maureen Mahoney and they have officially begun.  Everyone was very excited to see their friends at the various 19th holes all over Nassau and Suffolk County. Our first outing of the year was at Huntington Crescent Country Club.  Chris Sedlacek and her committee did a fantastic job running the outing and thank goodness the weather held up.

I hope you take advantage of everything EWGA LI has to offer.  As you can see we offer a lot and if you have an opportunity, get out there and enjoy it all!!!

Jackie Meli-RIzzo

Spring was in the air on the evening of April 21st, and with it the anticipation of the start of golf season as EWGA LI members gathered to welcome new members and enjoy a sumptuous reception social at The Hamlet Golf & Country Club in Commack.

It had been a warm day and the floor-to-ceiling windows lining the spacious ballroom overlooking The Hamlet's 9th hole framed our thoughts of getting back on the course.

Member Karen Furno and guest Joanne Gowen.

The room's conversations lulled after an hour and a half of socializing, as chapter president Jackie Meli-Rizzo welcomed members and guests, and introduced committee chairs to share insights and information on the upcoming season activities.

The questions on most attendee's minds were fielded by league chair Maureen Mahoney regarding season play, as well as chair Suzanne Garcia with respect to rules, etiquette and establishing a handicap. Also addressing the group were chapter

secretary Liz Tobin on clinics and education, past

HUNTINGTON CRESCENT CLUB OUTING - What a great day! HCC course

After days of rain, Monday May 2nd, turned out to be a spectacular day for all who attended the first great Golf Event of the year.

Huntington Crescent Club
in Huntington is one of the finest private clubs on Long Island and we are so lucky to be able to hold an EWGALI event there.

We started the day with a breakfast buffet to die for. After some time on the practice tees, putting green and of course, sales in the pro shop, we had a shotgun start at 12 noon. The weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold and fun was had by all. After golf we gathered for cocktails and then dinner. Chris Sedlacek and her wonderful committee of dedicated volunteers gave out raffles and awards. Awards were given out for the scramble teams (low gross and net), Best ball teams (low gross and net), longest drives, and closest to the pin. Raffle prizes were great especially for those who won them! However when all was done, the best part of the day was the new friendships that developed. Congratulations to the Golf Event committee for doing another great well done event for us!!!!!  See you at the next outing!

LEAGUES
by Maureen Mahoney

The 2011  LEAGUE SEASON BEGINS

 Peninsula League Opening 2011

The 2011 league season is finally underway.  Opening day at the Peninsula league featured bright sun and bright smiles, though the course challenged everyone with tough putting conditions.   All across Long Island, old friends are reconnecting, new members are getting acquainted, and everyone is trying to relearn their golf swings after a long, miserable winter.    As of May 1, more than 650 members had signed up for one or more of our 14 leagues.    Volunteers at each league have sent everyone the League Handbook as well as  league-specific  Welcome Letters that  provide extensive information about policies,  procedures, and deadlines.   Please read these documents carefully as they provide answers to most questions that arise during the early weeks of play.   Should a question arise that is not covered in the documents, please feel free to contact one of the league volunteers.

I hope you will all enjoy the leagues this season.  I also encourage you to avail yourselves of the clinics, the handicap seminars and the mentoring outings to help you improve your game and enhance your EWGA experience.   I look forward to seeing many of you out on the links as the season unfolds.
