MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
by Jackie Meli-Rizzo

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Jackie Meli-Rizzo

The Long Island EWGA Golf Season has officially started with the annual Tee Off on Tuesday, March 15th.  I hope you are as excited as I am to finally get out there with my fellow EWGA members.  Thank you to Lynne Nordone and her social committee for working so hard to put together this unique event.  I would like to thank Laura Palker for working hard with the sponsors to get them to the Tee Off and involved with the "Minute to Win it" contests.  Also, I would like to say thanks to all the Chairs, their committees, and the sponsors for working the tables and answering the voluminous questions the members had.

Our year started off with the social Hi! Tee and Chinese New Year Dinner which were hosted by the Social Committee.  Just recently Patrice Franco, Leadership chair, held a Volunteer & Leadership Social at Merrill Lynch in Melville.  It was an informative night that gave our volunteers a chance to really find out what kind of volunteer jobs are available and what is involved in moving up the ladder.

Stay tuned for more information on all that will be forthcoming in the next month or so.

See you all on the links or at our events,

Jackie Meli-Rizzo
President

LEADERSHIP

by Patrice Franco

Putter Striking Golf Ball

Leadership Chair Patrice Franco put out the message:  CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!

With only 1 week's notice EWGA LI Chapter members heeded the call and 26 members registered for the Volunteer and Leadership Social!  Board members Jackie Meli-Rizzo, President; Maureen Mahoney-League Chair; Chris Sedlacek-Golf Events Chair; Theresa Oropallo-Education and Player Development Chair; Suzanne Garcia-Rules and Handicap Chair and Laura Palker-Sponsorship Chair attended and talked about how they got involved with EWGA and what volunteer positions were open.

Patrice started the meeting defining the role of the volunteer, talking about the time commitment and the effort that is put forth by all of the volunteers that run this amazing Chapter.  She then talked about the rewards of volunteering and how the passion of every member has inspired our achievement.

President Jackie Meli-Rizzo shared her leadership growth experience personally and professionally, and introduced the board of directors. Chair by Chair, each leader talked about what benefits they received through their volunteer efforts.

Chris Sedlacek lead the way sharing her volunteer path, and the highlight of her efforts - bringing happiness to the members.  Golf Events needs volunteers to put foursomes together, shoppers and rangers.

Maureen Mahoney new to the board this year talked about her "roping in" and there was no lack of laughter as she described the journey.  Leagues need volunteers to help with league day photos.

Theresa Oropallo, also new to the board and without a committee, jumped right in saying she would even "beg" for volunteers if that's what it would take.  Education and Player Development needs volunteers on-site to register members and collect checks, greeters for clinics to welcome members and serve as an EWGA liaison to the golf pro, and mentors for the "Never Been To An Outing" Outing.

Suzanne Garcia talked about building her skills by her volunteer efforts.  She learned to use Excel and PowerPoint, both of which have been beneficial in her career.  And even more importantly, she has gained the confidence to speak publically - a skill that has afforded her the speaking platform on a professional level.  Rules and Handicap needs volunteers to assist with webinars, peer review to verify scores, and registration assistance for seminars.

Sandrina Devlopoulos spoke of confidence and the overwhelming kindness of the EWGA LI Chapter Membership.  She could not express the feeling she got when she was welcomed on her very first golf day as a member of EWGA.  Membership needs volunteers who are proficient in Excel.

Laura Palker talked about the role models that she has found, and how every day she is inspired by the women that she meets in the Long Island Chapter.  Sponsorship needs volunteers to work with the sponsor art files and logos, editor for the quarterly sponsor newsletter, event crew to coordinate set up of signage at golf events and social events, business networking coordinators and administrative assistance.

After the night ended Patrice said, "Every Chair did an outstanding job in their presentations to the group, and I have to say - I really think this was a big hit!  To hear that Theresa got 14 volunteers from the evening for Clinics...WOW!  And Chris said she got 9 volunteers ... great!  And a Treasurer's Committee ... well I just don't know what to do with myself now!"

What Our Members Said -

"Last night's little get together was really nice. You make everything look effortless. The food was terrific! ......  Anyway, I look forward to working with you this season. Let me know when you need help.

Helen

Hi Patrice,

Just wanted to thank you for having the meeting last night.  It was very helpful and removed some of the fear factors we bring on ourselves.  I will certainly share my experience with my golf friends who couldn't attend.  I may not have the athletic ability yet! but i certainly have the "passion" for golf and all that goes with it! Thanks again, it was a wonderful night.

The 2011  LEAGUE SEASON APPROACHES

Maureen Mahoney Snow Shot

Spring seems reluctant to make an appearance this year, but warmer weather is sure to arrive in time for the start of our 2011 season on May 3.  The League Committee is busy processing the hundreds of applications received during and after the March 15 Tee Off Event.   Applications are now available on the ewgali.org website for members who have not yet signed up for the leagues.

We have added a new 9-hole Sunday league, geared toward the novice golfer, at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island.  Spring Lake is a woman-friendly facility that currently hosts Suffolk Match Play and the Travel League on its Thunderbird course. Its Sandpiper course is a full-length, 9-hole track suitable for a broad range of golfing abilities. A special thanks to Cristy Grzymala at Spring Lake for her continued support of the EWGA leagues and to our members Edie  Romei and Peggy Hoehman  for  volunteering to run this new league.   EWGA Long Island now offers 14 leagues to its members, all made possible through the efforts of our volunteers.

Year-in and year-out dedicated chapter members have stepped-up to pitch in anyway they can ... and there's plenty of ways to help ... whether it's labeling and stamping our mailed invitations, managing registration sign-up, preparing badges, working the registration desks, caddying new and prospective members around the room, monitoring the door, making food & beverage decisions or

scheduling volunteer shifts. This year's event provided an additional opportunity to help out. Thanks to those members who modeled our sponsor
