Michele McGannPRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Summer and EWGALI - what a combination!!!!  The weather has been hot and humid but that did not stop our chapter members from having fun. Since our last e-newsletter, the events that have been presented by our chapter have been endless.  For the beginner golfers we had a "Pre-Season Meeting with Mentoring at Heartland" and the popular "I've Never Been to an Outing Outing" at Harbor Links. Our much appreciated Rules & Etiquette and GLMS Handicap Seminars were also well attended.  The "Meet and Mingle" outing at the Greens at Melville was a big hit for members and their guests.  And for our more advanced golfers the "Montauk Downs" challenge and the second "Presidents Cup" were challenging but a lot of fun (by the way the Blue Team Mallon strikes again!!!).

Lastly, I would like to thank all those board members that have helped me roll out the clinics at Harbor Links, Eisenhower, Skydrive and Oyster Bay for the remainder of the year.  Unfortunately Mary Torres had to step down as Golf Education and Player Development Chair due to work commitments. We thank Mary for her efforts for the past year and a half.  As a team we are offering many clinics at different venues; this is in addition to our duties as board members in other positions.  I would like to personally thank Susan Pickering, Bobbie Turner, Liz Tobin, Chris Sedlacek, Carolee Mancuso, Patrice Franco, Lynne Nordone and our new clinic volunteers Theresa Oropallo and Kathelyne Denis.  Talk about team work!!!!

Good luck to all those participating in the Chapter Championship this month, and I hope you are enjoying the leagues.

HOLE-IN-ONE BY EWGA LI CHAPTER MEMBER SUSAN BLOHM

Congratulations Susan Blohm
Hole in One - Susan Blohm

"It was funny how it happened ... I haven't played Harbor Links in about 2 years, and no one else in the group had ever played there, so I had to provide the local course knowledge.  We got to Hole #3 and I said to the girls, "this hole does not play 125 yards." One of them says, "does anyone have a GPS?" I say, "yes",  and try to get it working. Two of them tee off ... I say to Erin, "I can't get this thing working but I think it's 110-115 yards."  She gets up and hits (a nice shot). I take my 8 iron say, "whatever" and it was an "as seen on TV on shot". It was straight at the pin - and rolled right in! We all looked at each other quietly and said "I think that went in..." (there was a slight shadow from the flag) ... and no one moved. Finally I said, "what are we waiting for??".  We jumped in our carts and it was in the hole! We were all sooooo excited.  I then had to text, email and call just about everyone I knew."

FOR EWGA-LI MEMBERS AND GUESTS

Melville Meet and MingleIn celebration of Women's Golf Month, EWGA LI hosted a Member/Guest 18 Hole Golf Outing at the The Greens at Half Hollow in Melville.  This challenging executive course features 4,100 yards of golf from the longest tees, for a par 60.  The course rating is 59.5, with a slope rating of 97.  Members enjoyed either an 18 Hole Best Ball or 18 Hole Scramble.  Every participant was a winner.  The Greens really pulled out all of the stops and made each golfer feel special.

PRESIDENT'S CUP UPDATE:
TEAM MALLON WINS FOR THE SECOND TIME

For those of you who like competitive play, the President's Cup is just the ticket.  Every day someone is asking, "have you played yet?"  Followed by - "you have to play!"  There is one email that really just says it all.  (Unedited)

ladies, ladies, ladies

I'm dreaming about red and blue shirts holding hands while sitting on situpons around the campfire.

I half expect the Ya Ya Sisterhood to surround me with headdresses (don't get any ideas!!!!!)

What happened to don't tell anyone about all the fun we had...what happens at Cedarbrook stays at Cedarcreek.....it's all over the freakin Internet - is nothing sacred???????  I told my family I was on a retreat - I'm dead meat now!!

I don't know about you but where I was it rained and it was cold - there were 40 mph winds - when a tree branch fell on the first tee box, I looked around for Dorothy and Toto - they were no where to be found.  The non-conformist in me objected to being in uniform, but I believe I obtained conscious objector status by wearing my husband's clothing - all 5 layers (not to mention the 14 times I changed my clothes on the course:  windshirt on/off, T neck on/off/on, T neck only - oh, no:  out of uniform : collared shirt over T neck quickly....2 stroke penalty for carrying wardrobe changes in red bag.....also extra red/black outfit to change into for the pix in case the red team won!!!!!!  I wonder when they would have caught me-and what they would have done to me?????) Also, I was accused of doing my best Sister Betrille impression (you remember, The Flying Nun) - A fter almost 18 holes of focused golf (have fun, but play seriously - not the only oxymoron of the day!) - we rushed back for the cattle call for the last 9 (we're playing 27??????  who knew?), ok, I'll play, but I wasn't picked 4eva which brought back memories of the 4th grade and not getting picked for dodge ball - but I guess that's a story for another day......for now, please share whatever mind altering drugs are permitting you all to still be in the great space we were in on Saturday - for now I will live off the fumes of our great leaders and all the wonderful followers....until next time:

The decals are coming!

We are starting a new program this year in recognition of long time EWGA LI Chapter members.  All EWGA LI Chapter members who have been with the Chapter for 5 or more years will soon be receiving a clear car-window decal.

Every current member who joined the EWGA LI Chapter from 2000 to 2004 will receive the 3" decal (left) with the year they joined on it, so they can proudly display their membership.

We hope to continue this program next year, so be sure to renew your membership!
BOARD NEWS:  RULES AND HANDICAP

HANDICAP CORNER

As you know, maintaining a handicap index is mandatory for members playing in our intermediate and advanced leagues.

For those new to maintaining a handicap, questions often arise

of how it all happens.  We thought we'd share the answers to some questions the Rules and Handicap Committee has received about handicap posting recently.  Happy Posting!

Suzanne Garcia, Rules & Handicap Chair

HANDICAP POSTING Q&A

I have questions about posting my scores.  Who can help me?

Contact Suzanne Garcia and her committee at ewgarules@gmail.com with your rules and handicap posting questions.  Who knows, next month you may see your question and its answer in the EWGA newsletter too!

Does the league scoring captain post my scores for my handicap when I turn in my scorecard after league play?

No.  The player/member is responsible for posting all her own scores.  Our league scoring volunteers do not post scores for handicap purposes.  After they track all your scores for the end of season trophy hunt, they can't wait to get out on the golf course.

I belong to another league and the league posts my scores for me.  Do I need to re-enter those scores in the GN21 system?

In order to have a valid USGA handicap index, a player must post all scores from rounds played under the Rules of Golf.  This means you should post rounds from all your EWGA league play, recreational play, weekend play, tournament play and other league play in the same system, regardless of what system you use (GN21 or GHIN, etc.).

I only played 9 holes so I don't post that score - right?

No.  That is not correct.  USGA Handicap Posting Guidelines require you post all scores for both 9-hole rounds and 18-hole rounds.  You actually need to post your score if you played 7 out of 9 holes, or 13 out of 18 holes.  You would post your score for the holes you played, and then add "par" for any holes you didn't play, plus  any strokes you would be entitled to for that hole based on your Course Handicap.

BOARD NEWS:  LEADERSHIP

It's Your Turn to Get Involved!

Yes, it is your turn. We have many capable and willing members who have the skills, the talent, and the desire to lead our Chapter. This is your opportunity to make a positive difference -- do it now! Our Chapter Bylaws call for the membership to elect the Chapter Officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary), and for the Officers to appoint the Committee Chairs.
This year we will be electing officers for the following terms of office:
·        President: 1 year term
·        Vice President: 1 year term
·        Secretary: 2 year term

You will find an overview of the duties of each office and a nominating form in your email. You can nominate yourself or someone else from the membership who you feel would be a great asset to our leadership and foster the growth of our Chapter.

Being a Chapter board member or committee volunteer is a meaningful way to contribute to the Chapter decisions and operations and help carry out our mission. Yes, it takes a commitment, but the reward is tremendous! Please consider making a leadership commitment.

While it is not mandatory to have served as a Board member in order to run for Executive Office, it is preferable that nominees should have acted as volunteer leaders in an impactful way, either as Committee Chairs, Committee Finance Captains, Tournament Directors or through some other significant active committee participation. All nominees will be reviewed by the Nominating Committee as to their qualifications.

Many of us joined the organization without knowing anyone in EWGA. The friendships we have made and the lives we have touched have been amazing rewards for such a minimal contribution. I hope you will join us in sharing that experience.

Sincerely,
Patrice Franco
