JUNE - WOMEN'S GOLF MONTH
SIGNING OFF

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

I am happy to say the EWGA golf season is in full swing thanks to our committee chairs, volunteers and sponsors!!!!  May was a busy month with our first golf outing at Huntington Crescent, travel league outing at beautiful West Point, 13 leagues starting, Rules, Etiquette and Handicapping Seminars, Play Golf America Demo Day at Eisenhower and our "I've Never Been to an Outing Outing".

I would like to take a minute to highlight one special event that happened on Saturday, May 8th.  It was the first ever "President's Cup" conceived by our past presidents Janet Mallon and Patrice Franco. This was a great new competitive match play event for members with a 30 handicap or less, 27 hole event with 9 holes of Best Ball, Alternate Shot and Single matches.  Janet and Patrice did a spectacular job running this event as evidenced by the numerous "thank you" e-mails they received.  They gave our higher handicappers an opportunity to compete in a non-threatening "spirit of the game" atmosphere.  Kudos, Janet and Patrice, for your continued contribution to this chapter.

LATEST LEAGUE NEWS

Wow, it's the 11th season of the Long Island Chapter of EWGA and League play is in full swing.  We've enjoyed and also suffered through some spring weather like we've never seen.  Let's hope the summer brings plenty of sunshine and dry ground.

We have over 675 League members right now and we're sending out about 450 golfers each week!  What amazing stats.

We've held most of our meetings for new members, had many mentoring sessions and I hope our newer golfers are feeling more comfortable and confident on the golf course.  I thank all the hard-working League Committee members and seasoned players who so generously gave their time helping to acclimate our new golfers on the course and in league play.

I would like to just remind everyone that Rules & Etiquette Seminars are mandatory for all new members, regardless of playing ability.  Suzanne Garcia, our Rules & Handicap Chair, hopes to have a Webinar up soon so you can view it at your leisure.  This is something we recommend you do more than once.  There is a lot to absorb between the Rules of Golf, League rules & procedures and just trying to hit the darn ball.  You are sure to come away enlightened.

Maureen Mahoney

When you see Maureen Mahoney, be sure to congratulate her on her ALBATROSS.  She had a Hole-in-One on the 7th hole at Wind Watch during a rather windy, rainy day.  It is a Par 4 with water all along the right side of the hole.  So, that is a Double Eagle which has the technical term of Albatross.  What a feat!  Kudos to Maureen. Maureen was featured in Newsday this past weekend.

Our returning members have reconnected with their golf buddies and are welcoming new members.  I am so proud to be a part of an organization that supports and encourages each other.  It's nice to see everyone hanging out at the 19th hole after their round, so if you haven't made the effort yet, please come join in the fun.

Always be sure to check out our website for continued updates on our chapter's offerings.  Wishing you all continued fun on the course and off.

Happy Golfing!

After almost 4 years of editing the e-newsletter for our chapter, I'm passing my blue pencil on.  I've had a wonderful time helping to document the activities of EWGA LI along with the board chairs and other members who provide input.  But it's time for a change.  In order to bring some new ideas and take the e-newsletter to another level, I'm handing my editorial responsibilities over to Laura Palker and the Communications Committee.

See you on the back 9!
