Message from the President

Hi Everyone!

2009 marks EWGA Long Island's 10th Anniversary! We will be celebrating all year long, but have 2 special events planned to highlight the celebration. On February 8th, we have rented out the new theatre at Adelphi University, and brought in the cast of "Golf: The Musical" to put on a show for EWGA and our friends. "Golf: The Musical", is a four-person, one-musician revue with outrageous comedy, captivating songs and madcap skits about the grand game of golf, that the New York Times calls, "Hilarious!" EWGA will be subsidizing a portion of this show, as a way to give back to our members. The theatre can hold 400 people, so friends, relatives, and non-members are welcome. SAVE THE DATE; you should have already received your email invitation.

On Monday, July 27, 2009 we will be holding our Mega Golf Day and Grand Gala Celebration of 10 years of this fabulous chapter. We will be holding simultaneous golf days at courses around Long Island, geared for all levels of golfers. After golf, everyone will meet at the The Reckson Center at the Museums at Mitchell - Cradle of Aviation Museum for a grand celebration and dinner for all. Again EWGA Long Island will be subsidizing this event as a way to give back to our members. Watch your email in the coming weeks. This night will be the highlight of our 10 years as a chapter!

If you do nothing else this season, plan to attend these 2 events. Besides the fact the they will both be subsidized by the chapter, this is our chance to celebrate EWGA Long Island as being the #1 chapter in the world! WE are the greatest group of women that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, and there is no better way to show our appreciation for this great group than celebrating together.  Watch your emails and the website in the coming days and weeks.

EWGA BUSINESS WOMAN OF THE YEAR AWARD

EWGA LI's own Christine McInerney has been named Business Woman of The Year and will receive this prestigious award at the EWGA National Conference in February.  Christine was the founding member of our chapter and our first President 10 years ago.  It was Christine's desire to use golf for business that led her to start our chapter.  She and a core group of women raised the groundswell that has continued to grow and help us become the LARGEST CHAPTER IN THE WORLD!  See the official Press Release below:

"Christine McInerney Named 2008 EWGA Businesswoman of the Year

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, January 12, 2009- The EWGA (Executive Women's Golf Association) has named Christine McInerney as the 2008 EWGA Businesswoman of the Year. A partner and commercial litigator with Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, P.C. in Long Island, New York, McInerney will be honored at the awards gala dinner during the 2009 EWGA "Dare to Lead, Dare to Grow" Conference at the JW Marriott Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, California on February 18 -21.

The EWGA Businesswoman of the Year Award annually recognizes a EWGA member who has demonstrated exemplary business leadership, entrepreneurial spirit and expert business acumen, skills and talent to achieve success both on and off the golf course.

A cum laude graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, McInerney focuses on commercial and business litigation and has substantial experience in cases and representations involving intellectual property and technology.  She is the founding president of the EWGA Long Island, NY chapter, which started in 2002 and currently is the largest chapter in the organization with 940 members.

"When I began working on Long Island, I knew few people in the business community.  EWGA has been of tremendous assistance in that my role as a leader and founding president of the chapter created significant visibility for me," says McInerney. "Golf creates a connection, a bond of friendship. It has helped me build relationships within my firm and in dealing with clients and other business contacts."

McInerney is a member of the Board of Directors of the Nassau County Bar Association and Co-Chair of its Commercial Litigation Committee. She was named one of the Top 50 Women in Business by Long Island Business News in 2005 and 2007. She also serves on the Executive Board of Directors and Treasurer of the nonprofit Child Abuse Prevention Services.

"Christine is such a wonderful example of the accomplished women who have built our organization," says Pam Swensen, CEO of the EWGA. "These dynamic, unique and influential women have forged greater opportunities for women to utilize golf for both their professional and personal lives."

Since the EWGA started in 1991, the association has enriched the lives of more than 100,000 women, connecting them to learn, play, and enjoy golf for business and fun. EWGA chapters provide a wide range of golf, social and networking activities for both new and experienced golfers. A welcoming environment, golf education and player development, and organized play programs are part of the many benefits of EWGA membership.

The EWGA is headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. For more information about the association and membership, visit www.ewga.com."

CCole Ribbon CuttingSPONSORSHIP NEWS
It was a frigid morning, Sunday, November 23; certainly not a great golf day!  But it was a great day for EWGA LI to be part of the National Commerce Exchange (NCE) Holiday Boutique & Networking Event at the Nassau Coliseum.  In an effort to increase our chapter's exposure to LI businesses, we were sponsors at this event where NCE held a members-only event.  Our goal was to get the word out about EWGA, particularly since we will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary next year!

We had a spectacular booth created for us by one of our sponsors, Trade Show Solution Center.  Thanks to Laura Palker and her staff for putting this together.  Laura is a chapter member and Communications Chair for 2009.

Our space was right in the middle of the floor space so we had a wonderful opportunity to meet potential sponsors and talk with them about EWGA.  And we may have even recruited a few new members!  Thanks to the following EWGA members for volunteering their time:  Lynne Nordone, Eileen Maguire, Kathy Fal, Shannon Mashburn, Regina Israelian.

Holiday1 2008HOLIDAY & VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION PARTY ROCKS!

Chapter members kicked off the holiday season with a dinner party held at the Westbury Manor on December 9th.  The larger Manor Room provided plenty of room to eat, drink and dance the night away.  Music by guitarist Tommy Parris got the proceedings into full swing, as did Liz Weber leading the group in the perennial 12 Days of Christmas sing-along.

Chapter President Janet Mallon thanked outgoing board chairs Janet Knipfing of the Golf Events committee and Wendy O'Neill of the Communications committee, and welcomed new board Communications committee chair Laura Palker and Education & Player Development committee chair Mary Torres-Erickson who worked closely with former chair Chris Sedlacek who will now direct the Golf Events committee.

A record number of chapter volunteers were in attendance and hailed by Mallon as the backbone of our organization. Leadership Chair Patrice Franco recognized each individual from the podium and chapter board members helped present volunteer recognition gifts.

Sponsorship Chair Jane Gallagher thanked chapter sponsors and recognized those in attendance. They included Ricky Botha, Artrite, Inc.; Cathy Cole, Forward Tee Golf; Jane Delgado, Lindenmeyr Munroe; Linda Louis, The Louis Marketing Group; Janet Mallon, Mutual Engraving and Printing Company; Carolee Mancuso, Demasco Sena & Jahelka LLP; Christine McInerney, Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, PC; Ellen Meyerson & Roberta Schwartz, Merrill Lynch; Beth Meixner, Target Group Media; Laura Palker, Trade Show Solution Center; and Sue Rosenberg, AA All County Driving School.

Every attendee was reminded to "Stay Warmed Up" as plenty is brewing for EWGA LI's 10th Anniversary in 2009 with a table gift of a green stainless steel travel mug. Special 10th Anniversary events were announced - the first on Sunday, February 8th, "Golf The Musical," a reprise of the Off-Broadway revue at Adelphi University, and a Mega-Golf Day with concurrent play at a number of area courses, culminating with a party at The Cradle of Aviation Museum on Monday, July 27th. Stay tuned for more details.

Special thanks to Social Events Committee party volunteers Priscilla Aitken, Gloria Bauer, Jo Anne Cagen, Maddy Cangemie, Joanna Commander, Toni Dewey, Bunnie Eccleston, Ellen Meyerson, Lynne Nordone, Penny Pinkerton-Bernstein, Vivian Zaffuto and Fran Zaslow who contributed to their time and effort to ensure a successful event.
