END OF 2008 LEAGUE SEASON NEWS

The End of League Dinner was held on Monday, September 22nd and the evening was filled with fun and laughter and a few surprises.  It is a time to celebrate all our accomplishments; whether winning a tournament, receiving birdie and chip-in pins, or just having made new friends and played golf at some great venues.

This year we had three members who achieved the impressive feat of making Eagles and received the first-ever Eagle pins distributed by our Chapter.  Kudos go out to Roseann Bencivinni (2x), Maureen Mahoney & Lorraine Marquart.  We also had three members with Hole-in Ones.

My sincere gratitude goes out to all the Committee members who presented and distributed the trophies, which were given out in just over an hour -- pretty amazing with 11 Leagues.  Special thanks to our check-in crew; Terry Wolters, Jackie Meli-Rizzo, Angela Palermo & Lorraine Keryc, who arrived early and spent the cocktail hour (and beyond) at the front desk.

The event had record-breaking attendance and I must give Susan Blohm a great big THANK YOU for working tirelessly to make the dinner a huge success.

I hope everyone had a wonderful season.  Please be patient as we work the process to send you refund checks for your security deposit.  It is a rather large undertaking and we will begin as soon as the Travel League finishes at the end of October.  We then must systematically merge the 11 rosters and make deductions for no shows and late cancellations.

Linda Foy, our Finance Captain, works diligently to perform this huge task.  When the records are organized, Carolee Mancuso, our Treasurer, then processes and signs each check.  All the envelopes must then be stuffed and stamped and mailed out in time for you to do some holiday shopping.

It's the conclusion of my first year as League Chair.  It seems to have passed in the blink of an eye, but we're continuing to grow and stay strong and have a fabulous future to look forward to.  Please keep an eye out for word of our Holiday Party and off-season events.  It's a great way to stay connected.  See you at the Tee Off Dinner in 2009 if not sooner.

ERIN M. BENESCH had a hole in one at Long Island National Golf Club Hole  # 11 while playing with the Travel League on Sunday, September 28th. Yardage was 111, and she used a 9-wood...way to go!

Cathy Cole and husband Richard, owners of Forward Tee Golf in Farmingdale, have anounced they are closing their store.  A Gold sponsor for the past 2 years, Forward Tee was a unique golf store for women.  Cathy stocked the store with top shelf golf attire and equipment and just about any golf accessory a women could want.  Service was outstanding; Cathy went out of her way to cater to everyone who walked in the store.  Sales will continue until merchandise has been liquidated, so we encourage all members to stop by and pick up whatever you need.

Networking at Nordstrom, Sunday, October 5

We all know Nordstrom's reputation for personal service.  And we know EWGA women like to shop.  So it seemed only natural to have a private event at Nordstrom for EWGA LI Chapter members.  And that's exactly what happened on Sunday, October 5 in the hour before Nordstrom opened to the general public.  The day started with networking and a buffet breakfast provided by Nordstrom.  Then a fabulous fall fashion presentation was given by Heather Harewood, Personal Shopper and Wardrobe Consultant at Nordstrom.  Heather showed us how to use this season's trendy accessories to dress up or down basic investment pieces for every wardrobe and body type.  Afterward, ladies were invited to get a bra fitting to support the Fit for the Cure Breast Cancer (FFTC) event which raises funds for the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and were encouraged to stay on and shop with a personal shopper!

What a great, FREE event!  And everyone who participated received a pink goody bag with special treats from Nordstrom.

GOLF SCOTLAND!                          JT and Rosie Jones on Swilliken Bridge

My golf vacation trip to Scotland this August was the trip of a lifetime!  The country is obviously steeped in golf history, which emanates profusely from not only the courses, but also the towns, hotels, caddies and local people - all extremely warm, friendly and most welcoming to a group of eight women golfers.

We started in Edinburgh, Scotland, first playing Gullane #1 Course - supposedly the oldest golf club in the world.  The next day we played North Berwick.  Both were "true" traditional links designs - terrains created by nature's wind and sea, with undulating fairways starting in the quaint little towns and stretching slong the shores of the Firth of Forth, an estuary flowing from, and with views of the North Sea.

We then drove south to St. Andrews - the home of golf!  This picturesque little "walking" village oozes golf everywhere, with numerous golf shops, the Royal & Ancient Clubhouse, and pubs catering to golfers - especially Dunvegan's, just a nine iron away from the infamous 18th hole at the Old Course.

While staying in St. Andrews we played the Jubilee Course of St. Andrew's links, Carnoustie Championship Course - the ultimate test, Kingsbarns (a relatively newer course but with spectacular views of the crashing North Sea and challenging mountainous terrain), and finally, the Old Course at St. Andrews, with many photos on the infamous Swilken Bridge.

In addition to the rich cultural history of castles and ruins surrounding us, the golf was truly spectacular!  This fantastic, memorable golf trip was organized by Rosie Jones.com - - a site I originally found on the EWGA website.  It was first class, exceptionable, and, if you are in love with golf, a trip that I would definitely do again next year!

GLEN HEAD INVITATIONAL OUTING, SEPTEMBER 11, 2008

A sold-out crowd of 132 women converged upon Glen Head Country Club on Thursday morning, September 11, to participate in the 2008 EWGA-LI Invitational Outing, the final outing of the season.  It was a jacket on/jacket off day with a hint of autumn in the air.  "You're a Grand Old Flag" was the theme of the day, in recognition of the tragic events of 7 years prior.  Sue Foehrenbach arranged for patriotic balloon bouquets in red, white, and blue with flag bases, and Vicki Schuppe prepared a flag-oriented on-course trivia contest that resulted in a 5-way tie.
Janet Mallon, President of EWGA-LI, pulled out all the stops when she ordered the player gifts for the outing - cedar shoe trees with the EWGA-LI logo - which she swears keep her golf shoes in tip-top condition.  Many of the players descended upon the beautiful new Pro Shop for their $25 sale of summer apparel and practically cleaned out the inventory.  Glen Head provided its usual spectacular brunch buffet with omelet station, blintzes, bagels and accoutrements, and a complete salad selection plus dessert.  It was hard to choose, especially since an on-course barbeque was available at the 9th Hole.
At 1:00 PM, the foursomes met their caddies and rode out to their appointed starting holes for either a Best Ball (each golfer in the foursome plays her own ball, and the best score on each hole is recorded) or Scramble (each player tees off, the team selects the best drive, the players hit their second shot from there, and so on until the ball is holed out).  No one succeeded in winning the $10,000 on the 7th Hole or any of the other hole-in-one prizes on three more Par-3 holes, but several were able to "Beat the Financial Professional" hosted by Merrill Lynch and MetLife.  There were also longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contests for <24 handicap and 24> handicap players.
The clubhouse welcomed everyone back for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres at the end of the round.  Judy Lynch scurried about selling last-minute raffle tickets to the golfers, who had grand prize options such as a Bat Caddy battery-powered cart, a LaserKaddy range finder, and a 19" flat-screen TV, and regular prizes that included 2-night stays in Arizona, Florida, and North Carolina, as well as housewares, apparel, and jewelry expertly chosen by Doreen MacFarlane and her lovely sister, Lorraine Bocci.
Following a delicious barbeque dinner, trophies were awarded to these winners:

HOLE IN ONE (AND $10,000) AT WINDWATCH FOR LYNNE KRAMER

Lynne Kramer's hole in one was her second such feat in eight years of playing golf.  Lynne was a college softball player who transitioned quite nicely!  She tells of how she began playing golf after getting hit in the face twice with softballs and baseballs.  It was then that her father sent her golf clubs and recommended that she switch to a sport that wouldn't hurt so much!

"I got a hole in one the first year I played golf (2000) and didn't realize what a big deal it was
until I started really playing and of course couldn't replicate it.  Anyway, I certainly picked the right day to have a repeat. I was playing at Windwatch (where I play with the EWGA league) on Oct 7th at the Hauppauge Industrial Association Outing. They are a rather large business organzation out here. I was playing with 3 men and when we got to the 8th hole, I said to the guys that someone better put it on the green ( it was a best ball event) as this has always been a risky hole for me."

Lynne's amazing hole in one was a 154 yard shot with a fairly strong headwind. "I have played that hole several times and had always used a 3 or 4 hybrid. This time the red tee was about 15 yards back and with the wind, I decided ( much to my embarrassment) to use a driver. Anyway, for once in my life I hit it dead straight and saw the ball land on the green and look like it disappeared into the cup. I thought I saw what I did and was confirmed when the two male spotters on the green started screaming "holy s___!!!" I was playing with three men and there was another group of guys stacked up behind us. Everyone went crazy and you could hear the noise all over the course. Apparently it is the first time in the 29 year history of this outing that anyone ever got a hole in one, and for it to be a woman was extra special. The feeling was incredible. It is cool enough to get a hole in one but believe me when 200 people are cheering you at dinner and everyone is high fiving you and actually happy you won $10,000, it is a terrific feeling. I had made winning shots in big basketball games, tennis matches and volleyball matches but this was even better. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that we don't have that many heroic athletic moments anymore at my age!"
She plans on using her winnings to do something fun but isn't sure yet what that might be. Congratulations, Lynne -- we are proud you and share in your delight!
