"I've Never Been In an Outing Outing"
Back by Popular Demand for a 2nd Time This Season!

The EWGA LI Chapter held a Beginner Outing on Monday, August 18th, 2008 at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington.  This outing is affectionately referred to as the "I've Never Been In An 'Outing' Outing!"  Traditionally, the chapter hosts one beginner outing event each season.  However, because of the success of the first outing in June, many of our newer members strongly requested that a second outing be added to the calendar and the chapter agreed!

Intended for Beginner, Beginner Plus or Novice level players, the outing is part of the Chapter's effort to mentor new golfers as per EWGA National's S.W.I.N.G. (Skillful Women Inspiring New Golfers) program.

This EWGA beginner outing is all about making our new golfers feel comfortable playing a round of golf, even though their golf skills need a lot of development.   This outing is strictly an educational event which gives our new golfers the confidence to participate in one of our regular outings held throughout the season, or just gives them the confidence to play with better players.

The new golfers get a chance to have a mentor guide them through nine holes of golf.  Attention is focused on rules & etiquette as well as pace of play, and course management plus so much more!!! (all that stuff no one ever tells you about)

The ladies started the day with a Rules & Etiquette seminar delivered by Suzanne Garcia, our Rules & Handicap Chair.  A two hour clinic followed, which everyone truly enjoyed.  The clinic focused on short game, fairway shots and putting.  After the clinic, the ladies had lunch, played nine holes of golf and then enjoyed a fun barbeque afterwards.  The day was wonderful!  We had blue skies all day.  The event was very educational, lots of fun, a few pars were made, (even a birdie!) and new friendships were formed.

Special thanks to all of our mentors that day:  Jane Gallagher, Lynne Nordone, Liz Tobin, Janet Mallon, Denise Leto, Doreen Macfarland, Fran Walker, and Caroline Laur.

Thank you to everyone - the attendees, the mentors and to Guna Kunjan, Head Golf Pro at Harbor Links.

See you on the course!

A Play Date with the NY Liberty and the EWGA Long Island Volunteers

On Wednesday, August 13th, the EWGA Long Island Volunteers attended an event on Randall's Island sponsored by the NY Liberty women's professional basketball team. Discussions between Charlie Robson, Executive Director of Metro PGA, Northeast Region and Jackie Meli-Rizzo, Vice President EWGA LI started back at the "Play Golf America Day "at Eisenhower Park in May. Mr. Robson pursued the endeavor with the Liberty and extended the invitation to the Long Island and NY City Chapters. Others that were in attendance were the Liberty season ticket holders, sponsors, and staff.

Due to the limited spaces available for this event, the EWGA LI Board decided to offer the invitation to the hard working volunteers in recognition of their tireless efforts to support the chapter and all our events.
The event took place at Randall's Island Golf Club. It was a lot of fun watching our volunteers interact with the Liberty team, get autographs on the free t-shirts, hit balls in the batting cage, shoot some hoops, play miniature golf, compete in the chipping, putting and longest drive contests. It was a lot of fun watching the Liberty try to hit golf balls at the driving range. We were treated to a nice dinner and proud to say we were the winners of all the golf contests. Jane Firenze won the putting contest, Sandra James won the chipping contest. A member of the NY Chapter won the longest drive contest.

It was a great way to thank our volunteers for the hours and hours of service they dedicate to running the largest chapter in the world.  We look forward to a continued relationship with the PGA and the NY Liberty basketball team.

Jackie Meli-Rizzo, Vice President

Golf for Business Success Event - Back by Popular Demand!
Monday, September 15 at the DeMatteis Center

Wondering how you can leverage golf to enhance your business, even in the off-season?  Being a golfer can help you in business and this event will show you how.  This seminar, given by Adrienne Wax and Leslie Andrews of Golfing Women, was a sell-out last year and the reaction from our members was so wonderful that we had to do it again.  This event is open to everyone, so bring your friends, partners, spouses, even your boss!

There's still time to register for next Monday's event!  Click Here for more information.
