Chapter Championship Winners Announced
Golfers Move on to the Northeast Section

EWGA golfers put their best round forward at the Chapter Championship at Tallgrass Golf Course on July 10th, in the hopes of representing the Long Island Chapter at the upcoming sectional and national championship. Members prepared by playing practice rounds and honing their skills in preparation for the competition.

Golfers started the day with a rules meeting, conducted by Rules and Handicap Chair Suzanne Garcia who outlined course-specific information and recapped scoring procedures. In the weeks and days preceding the event, she and her committee diligently checked handicaps and organized the players into five groups of equal ability, known as "flights". "Only those members with an official USGA handicap such as GLMS or GHIN were eligible to compete," Suzanne explained.

"Our members, as a whole, are well-versed in the rules of golf, but in the Championship they are really on their toes," Suzanne noted. Chapter Championship Director Hilary Hartung, who organized the event for the first time, was impressed with the level of play and was grateful to everyone who helped make the day a resounding success.

There are many elements that have to come together to meet the EWGA standards, such as yardage and tee placement, Hilary said. "I had an amazing committee and could not have done it without the help of Suzanne Garcia, Patrice Franco, Sandy Hutchins, Jane Callaghan, Peggy Silbert, and Michelle Gargiulo who helped with record keeping, course set up, registration, photography and marshalling. You were all great!!"

"It was a beautiful day and the course was in perfect condition. Everything ran smoothly, and with the help of the Tallgrass staff the Chapter finished the tournament in record time," Hilary  noted. Players ended their day with a delicious barbecue and the awards presentation.

The winners went on to represent the LI Chapter on August 9th at Seaview Marriott in Gallaway, NJ. Among those to advance were 10 stroke play winners which included the first low gross and first low net in each of the five stroke play flights. In addition, a 4-woman scramble team with the lowest net score moved on to represent the Chapter in the Sectional "scramble" competition.

Chapter President Janet Mallon was thrilled at the results. "Not only do we have the biggest EWGA Chapter, we have the best Chapter! Naturally, we are all hoping to have Long Island represented at the National Championship and I think this is the group that could make it happen." Leadership Chair and former Championship Director Patrice Franco agreed, saying, "I think this is one of the strongest fields of competitors moving on to the Sectionals that we have ever had."

We congratulate them and wish them all the best of luck!   A special congratulations to Christine DeRienzo who is the overall Chapter Champion!

How Do You Say Thank You?
The Volunteer of the Month Program is One Way!

Hopefully, by this time of the golf season, you've enjoyed a number of great EWGA events, whether it's been one of our fabulous golf outings, social events, clinics and educational programs, or ongoing league play.  The success of everything we do could not be possible without the hard work and dedication of over 100 Volunteers who serve on our various Committees.  As we enjoy summer, we wanted to reflect back on the year and recognize the efforts of these incredible women who have worked tirelessly to make the EWGA Long Island Chapter not only the biggest, but the BEST Chapter in the Organization!

In appreciation for the efforts of our Committee Volunteers, we are pleased to continue our Volunteer of the Month Program.  While it truly takes a team effort to achieve success, the Volunteer of the Month Program recognizes one individual each month who has made a significant contribution to her respective committee.  Potential candidates are submitted by each Committee Chair, and a random drawing is made to select each monthly winner.

Please join the EWGA Long Island Chapter in saying THANK YOU to the following Volunteers for their outstanding Committee service.  In appreciation for their volunteerism, the Chapter is pleased to award each with a $25 voucher good toward a future EWGALI social event, golf outing or clinic.

Modifying Scores on GLMS

Did you ever forget to change the date to the date you played your round when posting a score a day or more after playing the round? Or, make a mistake and post your score for 18 holes, when you only played nine - or pick the blue tee box from the drop down menu when you played from the red tee box?  If so, you are not alone.  The good news is it's really pretty simple to correct the error.  Just log onto GLMS as usual.  When your Home Page loads, click "View Scoring Record" on the right side of the screen.  Then click on the score itself for the posting you want to correct.  Then just pretend you are entering the score for the first time, make whatever changes need to be made, click on "Post Total Score" at the bottom of the screen - and you're done.  Your score will now appear in red numbers with the date the score was modified.

Of course, what seems perfectly clear to me, may not be for you.  And, if you have entered a score twice, or need to delete a posting completely for another reason, a member of the Rules & Handicap Committee will need to make that change for you.  If you have any questions about your handicap, or posting a score on GLMS, or deleting a score posted in error, please e-mail me at sgarcia@optonline.net.  I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

SWING FORE  A CURE

The 122 EWGA-LI members and guests could not have asked for a more perfect summer day to play 18 holes of golf at The Woodmere Club's beautiful and challenging course on Monday, August 4.  The "Swing Fore a Cure" Babe Zaharias outing benefited the breast and prostate programs of research and cancer control of American Cancer Society.  "Beat the Odds" was the theme for the day, complete with an entertaining trivia contest on course prepared by Vicki Schuppe and poker hands at the dinner table dealt by Theme Team head Sue Foehrenbach.

After visiting the vendors' displays and enjoying smoothies and assorted breakfast treats, the players visited the practice tee and green in preparation for the 1:00 PM shotgun tee-off.  The full field tried unsuccessfully to win $10,000 or one of the other hole-in-one prizes on the four par-3 holes.  Some did "Beat the Financial Professional" hosted by Merrill Lynch and MetLife by landing closer to the pin on the 11th hole.  Women's teams and mixed teams played either a Best Ball (each player in the group plays his/her own ball, and the best score on each hole is recorded) or a Scramble (each player tees off, the team selects the best drive, all the players hit their second shot from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed out for one team score).  The Scramble was the more popular option.  A closest-to-the-pin contest on the 3rd hole, and a longest-drive contest on the 12th hole, for women of <24 handicap and >24handicap, and for the men, had everyone giving it their best shot.

After the round was over, the players met at Woodmere's capacious bar for cocktails and canapés and took the opportunity to make their final raffle ticket purchases.  At the buffet supper in the elegant dining room the players enjoyed Asian, Italian, and good old American cuisine, and eagerly awaited announcement of the winners - golf, raffle, and silent auction.  EWGA-LI's sponsors were particularly generous with their raffle donations which included a complete set of Adams Idea A30S golf clubs and shocking pink golf bag provided by Cathy Cole of Forward Tee.  Other prizes included LaserKaddy range finders, vacation gift certificates donated through Helms Briscoe, custom driver and golf lessons from Pete's Golf Pro Shop, emergency radios, zero-gravity recliners, and the coveted TPI Evaluation from John Ondrush Academy.
