OLDE VINE GC TURNS SPRING
9 & DINE UP A NOTCH

Rarely is a golf event cancelled for rain, let alone heat. On what was the second hottest day of the year to date on June 10th, chapter members gathered at the private Olde Vine Golf Club in Riverhead for our annual Spring 9&Dine event.

More than half of those attending opted for the bus transportation coordinated by EWGA LI member Kathy Fal of Fantastic Tours and Travel who made it not only a fun way to travel, but an easy way to forge new friendships as well.

All golfers gathered in Olde Vine's beautiful clubhouse before hitting the challenging links course for the nine-hole scramble tournament. The afternoon breeze made play bearable. While not a tree in sight except the grape arbors, there was plenty of fescue to navigate.
By spreading our field of foursomes over 18 holes, Head PGA Pro Lee Kaiser not only sped up play but allowed for two sets of contest winners - on the front and back nine.

On the front nine, the winners were Low Team: Leda Malaga, Maureen Mahoney, Janet Amodie and Erin Benesch; Closest To The Pin: Lynne Nordone; Longest Drive: Janet Amodie.  On the back nine, Low Team went to Margaret Chase, Dawn Tenny and Sue OConnor; Closest To The Pin: Aurera Guarnaccia and Longest Drive: Ellen Cohen.

Chapter sponsor Cathy Cole of Forward Tee Golf in Farmingdale provided $50 gift certificates for the longest drive and closest to the tee winners.

After freshening up in the beautifully appointed ladies locker room, chapter participants enjoyed cocktails and scrumptious hors d'oeurves that included coconut shrimp, mini crab cakes and capanata on toast points in addition to displays of melon with
prosciutto, vegetable crudite and cheeses before sitting down to a four course dinner.

Executive chef Robert Molter went above and beyond to create a memorable dinning experience. His menu paired wines of the North Fork with local cuisine. The appetizer course of miso marinated sea bass with soba noodles was paired with Pinot Grigio wine, followed by a beat and bean salad. Merlot was served with the filet mignon entrée followed by strawberry shortcake with a dab of fresh whipped cream.

Olde Vine general manager Ed Mathews and director of sales & marketing and EWGA LI member Marie Sufrin addressed the group - thanking EWGA LI for partnering with them and highlighting the various membership and catering opportunities the private equity, member-owned club offers. For more information, contact Marie at 632-369-7151.

To cap off a great day, our event drawing included two $300 prize winners; two Olde Vine Golf Club Merlot winners; six winners of chapter sponsor Pete's Golf Pro Shop gift certificates for either a golf lesson or club re-gripping; one 3-in-1 Golf Cooler Bag winner; and courtesy of chapter sponsor and EWGA LI member Denise Adam of the meeting procurement firm Helms Briscoe - one Disney golf gift basket winner, one Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Orlando 3 day/2 night stay and one Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino Las Vegas 3day/2 night stay.

It was a great day! Many thanks to participating members and our contributing sponsors. Special recognition is deserved for the dedication and hours of work put into planning by social event committee members Gloria Bauer, Penny Pinkerton-Bernstein and Fran Zaslow, as well as the onsite support of Joanna Commander, Frances Vail and Vivian Zaffuto.
The success of this event would not be possible without their involvement.

I'VE NEVER BEEN IN AN 'OUTING' OUTING!

The EWGA LI Chapter held a Beginner Outing on June 16, 2008 at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington.  This outing is affectionately referred to as the "I've Never Been In An 'Outing' Outing!"  Intended for Beginner, Beginner Plus or Novice level players, the outing is part of the Chapter's effort to mentor new golfers as per EWGA National's S.W.I.N.G. (Skillful Women Inspiring New Golfers) program.

I am sure that all of us can think back to the first time we stepped on a tee box; how nervous and fearful we were and how intimidating that first tee box appeared.   I can clearly remember mine.  I had taken lessons all summer, but had never really been taught the ins and outs of playing on a course.  The woman I was playing with was a seasoned golfer and she was in charge of the group (Not EWGA).  She walked up to me and asked if I had read the Rule Book.  Fear and panic ripped through me as I hadn't realized I needed to read and memorize the entire rule book before going out on the course.  After all, I wasn't planning to play in any championships.  Actually, I had breezed through the book very briefly, but really didn't understand most of the rules.  Needless to say, I was a nervous wreck my first round, but decided to stick with it.  Looking back, it would have been wonderful to have had an EWGA sister walk me through my first round.

During a golf lesson or clinic, you are taught how to swing a club, how to follow through, how to putt, chip, drive; but no one teaches you how to conduct yourself on the course. No one tells you how to mark your ball, where to place your golf cart, when to stop talking, who goes first, when to pull the pin, etc.  Very often, we find out the hard way; someone points out that we're doing something wrong and of course, that makes you feel even worse as a beginner golfer.  Not only is your golf game bad, but you don't have a clue what to do or what not to do.  Talk about intimidation!

This EWGA beginner outing is all about making our new golfers feel comfortable playing a round of golf, even though their golf skills need a lot of development.   This outing is strictly an educational event which gives our new golfers the confidence to participate in one of our regular outings held throughout the season, or just gives them the confidence to play with better players.  The new golfers get a chance to have a mentor guide them through nine holes of golf.  Attention is focused on rules & etiquette as well as pace of play, and course management plus so much more!!! (all that stuff no one ever tells you about)

The ladies started the day with a clinic, had lunch, played nine holes of golf and then enjoyed a fun barbeque afterwards.  The feedback I received was very positive and here are a few of the attendees' comments:

This was such a nice event and  it's nice to see it being offered to others in August.  I meant to tell you what a great day I had on June 16th.  Thanks for your  coordinating.  Tinny Short

It was a terrific day.  Everyone was wonderful, thank you.  Our seasoned EWGA helper was Sue and she couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.  Sylvia Kachala

Thanks again for putting together such a great day for us.  As a "beginner golfer", I had a wonderful experience from start to finish and I realize how much hard work you did to make it all go so smoothly. Erin was our mentor and she was terrific.  I think all the ladies in our foursome enjoyed her also.  Enjoy your summer!    Denise Gentile

A very special thank you to all of the Mentors who took time that time to mentor our new golfers:  (left to right in photo)  Ellen Toritto, Sandy Hutchins (who mentored even with a broken arm!!), Liz Rye, Erin Benesch, Sue Rosenberg, Mary Kay Galvin, Terry Wolters, Maureen Mahoney and Liz Tobin.

Group Mentoring

What a terrific team of Mentors!!!!  And the best part was that once the email announcement went out about the outing, THEY all contacted ME to let me know that they would be happy to volunteer as a mentor!!!!  Thank you ladies!!!!!  A big round of applause for your efforts!

Each Mentor received a S.W.I.N.G. hat and S.W.I.N.G. pin from EWGA National and our new golfers also received a S.W.I.N.G. pin.  In addition, everyone received a 25% discount for any on line purchase from Bette & Court (EWGA National Sponsor)  as provided by EWGA National.  The day was wonderful: the weather cooperated and the rain held off until we were on our way home.  The event was very educational, lots of fun, a few pars were made, and new friendships were formed.

Thank you to the attendees, the mentors and to Guna Kunjan, Head Golf Pro at Harbor Links.

See you on the course!

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND TRAP!
Women's health was the topic of this event, held in May at St. Francis Hospital's DeMatteis Center for Cardiac Research Education in Old Brookville. Underwritten by our Diamond-Level Sponsor Merrill Lynch, the evening kicked off with refreshments and an hour of networking followed by an introduction by the Center's Marketing Director Bob Spina who explained the variety of health services provided at the DeMatteis Center including the focal point - The Women's Center, which provides a caring, low-stress environment for mammography, ultrasound, breast needle biopsies and osteoporosis screening.

Tracy Dellomo of Merrill Lynch addressed the ladies urging them to consider planning for their financial health. She then introduced Women's Health Expert Dr. Nancy Dintenfass who enlightened the audience by giving tips on how to get a better mammogram and the importance of early detection and prevention through good nutrition. The program ended on a lighter note, with stand up comedy by local comedienne Darlene Violette.

The speakers pictured above (L-R): Janet Mallon, EWGALI President; Tracy Dellomo, Vice President, Merrill Lynch and EWGA LI Sponsor/Member; Darlene Violette, Comedienne/Actress, and Dr. Nancy Dintenfass, Radiologist and Women's Health Specialist.
