Calling all New and Experienced Commerce Bank Championship Marshals!!!
I am happy to announce that we will be marshaling the 18th hole of the 22nd Annual Commerce Bank Championship. The Champions Tour event returns to the Red Course at EisenhowerPark (East Meadow, NY) June 25th through June 29th, 2008.
This is a really important event for us because of its history. Our chapter was conceived by our founding President Christine McInerney and others during the Women's Business and Golf Luncheon during this event 9 years ago.
Over the years the marshaling has grown and the professional golfers and caddies look forward to the "ladies" manning the 18th hole. Our reputation has been that we are the best marshaled hole of the entire event. I believe that this is a great opportunity for new golfers and seasoned ones to be "in the ropes" and enjoy an experience of a lifetime - professional golf. We marshal as a group and this is another great way to meet some of your fellow EWGA Long Island members. If you have any limitations that do not allow you to marshal, there are other volunteer positions available.
Please contact me at jackiemelirizzo.ewga@gmail.com if you are interested or have already signed up. If you need an application, please click here Commerce Bank Application, download and mail to the tournament office. Then send me an email advising me that you sent in an application. If you have sent in your application, just let me know which days you signed up for and I will make sure they pull your names to work with us as a group. Liz Tobin will again be the Assistant Hole Captain, and she will be working the days I can not be there.
Looking forward to working with you all again,
Jackie Meli-Rizzo

LEAGUE NEWS Leagues are in full swing and we've already held some tournaments. It seems that Tuesday has replaced Wednesday as the "rainy day of the week," and our Harbor Links League has not been treated kindly by Mother Nature. We hope that turns around this month and everyone gets on track with their League play. Our Pre-Season meeting at Heartland was followed by a mentor outing on a beautiful day, which was a huge success. At Cherry Creek we followed the Pre-Season meeting with a windy round of golf where your biggest challenge was trying to hit the ball straight. Might be a good idea to take a lesson on how to keep the ball flight low. It was a great opportunity for the women of that league to experience the back 9, as they only play the front during League Play. After a rainout the first week, the Match Play series held its first set of matches. A large group of sleepy-eyed women showed up for their tee times. Being the stalwarts that we are, we got out there and gave it our all. Win, lose or draw, the women all came in with smiles and most stayed to enjoy a delicious breakfast and some bonding before heading off to work. If you have not attended a Rules & Etiquette Seminar, please do your best to attend the one on June 23rd. Details will be announced shortly by Suzanne Garcia. This is an important and informative seminar and mandatory for all new members. You will come away enlightened and you'll surely feel more comfortable and confident on the golf course. As always, remember that our communications are sent by e-mail and this is our way of imparting important information about EWGA-LI, the Leagues, etc., so we would appreciate your taking the time to read them so you'll always know when there's a tournament, how it is played, if there have been any changes in procedures, etc. You should also be in the habit of checking the tee time schedules that are sent each week to make sure you are on the schedule when you have requested and that you are not on it when you are not able to play. I hope you are all enjoying the season and keep hitting them long and straight! Liz Tobin League Chair

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND TRAP! Women's health was the topic of this event, held at the DeMatteis Center for Cardiac Research Education in Greenvale. Underwritten by our Diamond-Level Sponsor Merrill Lynch, the evening kicked off with refreshments and an hour of networking and then some serious talk by Dr. Nancy Dintenfass about current trends in women's health. Among other things, Dr Dintenfass spoke about osteoporosis and breast cancer and the importance of early detection and alternative treatments. The program ended on a lighter note, with local comedienne Darlene Violette. Everyone was invited to take a tour of the Center's state-of-the-art facilities before they left. | |
