Ah....Spring!

It's windy and rainy and cool; a sure sign that Spring is here and the golf season is ready to bloom.

We had a blast at this year's Tee Off Dinner.  I hope you were there to join us.  It's the single biggest event we have each year and it takes so many people to pull it together.  Planning has already started for next year's Tee Off!

To all the volunteers who helped out during the days, weeks and months leading up to and including March 18, THANK YOU SO MUCH!  We just couldn't run this event, or the chapter, without all of you.

And keep watching the website for information about upcoming activities.  Spring clinics are under way and we've already had the first Rules & Etiquette Seminars.  And the Huntington Crescent Outing is just around the corner, April 24.

Remember to warm up and avoid injuries!

TEE-OFF DINNER DRAWS RECORD NUMBERS

Nearly 450 EWGA LI members, prospective members and sponsors converged on The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Tuesday, March 18, for the official launch of the 2008 golf season at our chapter's 9th Annual Tee-Off Dinner.

As chapter president Janet Mallon noted, "Congrats to everyone, and I mean everyone. This organization would not exist without all the help of not just the board members, but all the volunteers." Thanks to all who manned (womenned) the tables that night, to the social committee, and to all the behind the scenes people who helped pull off an outstanding event.

During the opening reception from 5:30-7:00 pm, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres were enjoyed amidst the hustle and bustle of members signing up for league play, clinics and seminars, golf events, membership, committee work and checking out our sponsors' offers.

At the dinner which followed, Janet Mallon welcomed attendees and presented "Teeing Up the 2008 Season" - an overview of things to watch for in the year ahead. In her opening remarks, Janet welcomed Cara Vietri, Metro Northeast Sectional Director, to the podium to update the group on the breadth and depth of the national EWG organization.

Malllon continued the program citing our Long Island chapter's claim to the "largest EWGA chapter in the world" with over 900 members.  Chapters worldwide now include Canada and Paris, France. She noted our chapter is proud to continue to partner with the USGA, PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour in serving as marshals and volunteers in the year ahead.

Janet reminded the group that while the 2008 Season Guide that was handed out at the event was a handy trove of information, members should continually check the chapter website, www.ewgali.org for the latest information on activities and events as new items are continually being added.

New for 2008 is the addition of an 18-hole Saturday league at Heatherwood and a Match Play Series for members with a handicap of 25 or less early Friday mornings at Harbor Links. All league, clinics, rules, etiquette and handicapping seminars, golf outings and social events are posted on the chapter website. Also of note, when submitting league applications, be sure to download the waiver form that is required this year as well.

Also announced were the chapter's 18-hole golf outings to be held in Huntington, Woodmere and Glen Head again this year, and spring and fall 9&Dine outings - the first to be held June 10th at Olde Vine Golf Club. Mallon emphasized the quality and value of the clinics offered and the fun to be had at the annual EWGA Chapter Championship for golfers of all levels.

Sponsorship Chair Jane Gallagher recognized all of our 2008 chapter sponsors, and introduced one of our new sponsors, Monique Attar of Networking Magazine, who briefly addressed the group. Another new chapter sponsor, Denise Adam of Helms Briscoe, hosted two drawings.  Helms Briscoe is a leader in meeting procurement and has donated several hospitality gifts for our members.  The first drawing was a gift certificate for a two night Bed & Breakfast for two at the CrownePlaza at the Crossings, Warwick, RI and it was won by Elizabeth Benson.  The second was a gift certificate for a round of golf for two at the Barnsley Gardens Resort, Adairsville, GA which was won by Carolyn Florio.  Congratulations to the winners and thank you, Helms Briscoe!

A jazzy photo montage of highlights of the 2007 season featuring chapter members and Haagen Daz truflles rounded out the evening.

For those of you concerned about Myrian, a Crest Hollow employee who was one of our servers and who took a bad fall as she was serving dinner, Crest Hollow has informed us that she was released from the hospital that same night and a full recovery is expected.

The EWGA LI board of directors would like to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers that made the 9th Annual Tee-Off Dinner a resounding success.

SPRING SOCIAL BRINGS TOGETHER NEW AND ESTABLISHED MEMBERS AND SPONSORS

Set on the second story of the Victorian mansion known as The Woodlands, The Delano Restaurant's two private dining rooms and bar provided a touch of elegance and classic refinement for chapter board of directors and members to warmly welcome new members and sponsors at the 2008 New Member & Sponsor Appreciation Spring Social on Thursday evening, April 3rd.

It was a great time for 70 attendees to mix and mingle over cocktails and hors d'oeurves, to meet some of our sponsors, and to have the opportunity to find out about all that our chapter has to offer and how to get involved through volunteering in a brief program that rounded out the evening.

Chapter President Janet Mallon and board members shared informational highlights of events and activities that are upcoming in the months ahead. Audience questions were encouraged and addressed by Liz Tobin, League Chair; Chris Sedlacek, Education Chair; Suzanne Garcia, Rules and Handicap Chair, Susan Pickering, Membership Chair; and Janet Mallon fielded questions on golf outings for Janet Knipfing, Golf Events Chair who not in attendance.  Sponsorship Chair Jane Gallagher welcomed and introduced each attending sponsor, detailing their varied products and services of which members were encouraged to take advantage of the many offers they provide us.

Social Chair Lynne Nordone announced the next two social events: "Get Your Head Out of the Sand Trap" a women's health program featuring Dr. Nancy Dintenfass, D.O., Director of Women's Imaging Services at The Women's Center of St. Francis Hospital and comedian and stage/screen actress Darlene Violette on May 29th at the DeMatteis Center; and the Spring 9 & Dine on June 10th at Olde Vine Golf Club. Last, but certainly not least, Leadership Chair Patrice Franco, talked about the importance of volunteering and current opportunities on various committees.  Also in attendance were chapter Vice President Jackie Meli-Rizzo, Secretary Bobbie Turner and Treasurer Carolee Mancuso.

The lively Q&A was welcomed by directors and members were reminded that they can contact the appropriate committee chairs with questions at anytime. Contact information is available on the chapter website, www.ewgali.org under the Committees link.

Two chapter sponsors donated drawing prizes at the event.  The first was a gift certificate worth $100 of printing at Mimeo.com given by Trade Show Solution Center and won by Ellie Albert.  A gift certificate for a 2-night stay at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Golf & Spa Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a round of golf for 2 at the Whirlwind Course was provided courtesy of Helms Briscoe and won by Sharon Hamilton.  Thanks to both of our sponsors and congratulations to the winners!

Many thanks to social event committee members who dedicated countless hours pre-event to ensure a enjoyable evening for all - Gloria Bauer and Penny Bernstein, and also to Ellen Meyerson and Fran Zaslow who assisted Gloria, Penny and Lynne checking in and greeting attendees onsiteNMR: RickyPlus
