Help to reduce gangs and youth violence

AOur Community Our Kidsrlington and Mansfield area leaders launched a new collaboration called Our Community, Our Kids to support strategies that reduce gangs and youth violence.

Our Community, Our Kids is a newly formed collaboration that is working toward a coordinated and comprehensive plan for addressing the needs of youth. Its purpose is to address gangs and violence, and increase support for youth in southeast Tarrant County.

According to a release by the City of Arlington, the initiative grew out of a 2006 United Way Arlington study on child abuse and neglect. The effort was renewed when area leaders agreed to focus their collective strengths and resources on providing at-risk youth with alternatives to gangs as part of a Gang Summit and Gang Intervention Committee hosted by the Arlington school district in 2008.

Campuses start using phone notification system

TelePArentA few campuses have started using the new phone notification system to call homes.

As an update to where we are on the implementation phase, on Friday, October 29, over 60 staff members from across the district were trained on how to use the TeleParent system. We are working on a training plan for teachers in the spring once the school administrators get more comfortable making campus calls.

How you can help: Parents, please be sure your phone number is correct in Infinite Campus. If you need assistance, please call your student's school.

Read more about TeleParent benefits, usage and share you thoughts on the announcement blog post.
Holt teacher named to Heartbeat Team

Heartbeat Team October 2010Tonita Hall, a Kindergarten teacher, received the latest Mansfield ISD Heartbeat Team Award during a surprise presentation at Carol Holt Elementary. Tonita was selected for her dedication to students both in the classroom and outside of it.

District Superintendent Dr. Bob Morrison, along with Holt Elementary Principal Kelly Campbell, surprised Tonita in her classroom on Friday, October 15.

Tonita Hall has a strong connection with each of her 22 students. It is not a surprise to any of them for her to show up on a weekday or weekend at one of their sporting events. She is not a quiet spectator either, but a very proud fan cheering them on. Hall brings hand made goodies such as bookmarks, key chains and even personalized foam fingers to share with them after the game. The following school day, she lets the student sit on a special stool in her classroom as she brags on them and their accomplishments.

"As a district employee, she has inspired me to try and make more of a connection outside the classroom with the students I serve. I have seen first hand what an impact this has on students," said Carolee Wilson, Cross Timbers Librarian and parent of a former student in Hall's classroom.

Bikes for Angels - The Automotive Technology Department at Ben Barber Career Tech Academy has kicked off their school fundraiser for our Bikes for Angels Fund for Christmas 2010. Last year, the Auto Tech students raised over $20,000 and purchased 461 bicycles for Angel tree students at our Intermediate and Elementary schools. They also donated bikes to the Cleburne Family Crisis Center who assists Battered women and children and Operation Blessing and Frazier Elementary School in Burleson.

The goal this year is to buy at least 600 bicycles for needy children who would otherwise not get bikes for Christmas.
