School Board Update

Just a few things worth mentioning from the October 27, 2009 School Board Meeting:
  • The MISD School Trustees moved to "put the MISD Performing Arts Auditorium and Professional Development Center at The Shops at Broad pending the final resolution of a tri-party agreement between MISD, City of Mansfield and Forest City Developers at the November 17th Board Meeting." Read more...
  • A presentation was given on a new Bell Schedule for Ben Barber Career Tech Academy that will start Fall 2010. (More details on this to come later in the school year.)
  • Another presentation was given on a separate issue for Ben Barber. A committee has been formed at the campus to explore some possible changes to the school. One of the suggestions includes opportunities for students being enrolled full-time at Ben Barber in order to take all courses at the campus instead of their "home campuses." More details on this will be available as it progresses.
  • Demographer's Report included information on student and employment trends, housing projections, student population characteristics, projected student enrollment, and long range planning.
  • Public Hearing for Schools FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) 2009 Rating Presentation. MISD received a Superior Achievement result and the numerical score of 80 for this year. The district received the highest rating possible for all seven years that the rating system has been in place. (Schools FIRST rating based on 2007-2008 data.)

Exploring a century of education
Guest post from the District blog

The following is an excerpt from the guest blog post by Amanda Rogers, Managing Editor of the Mansfield News-Mirror.

The world can change in 100 years, particularly the past century.
100th Anniversary logo
World wars can be fought, man can walk on the moon, fatal diseases can be conquered, telephones can become commonplace and carried in our pockets and communication can progress from telegrams to the Internet.

The Mansfield school district has been through it all, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Growing from a few students in a leftover building to more than 30,000 on 39 campuses (as soon as Annette Perry Elementary opens), the district has survived recessions, depressions, war, racial conflict and unprecedented growth to become a respected name throughout the Metroplex and the state.

10 Schools meet ENERGY STARŪ Rating

Mansfield ISD has 10 schools that were recently recognized for being set apart by The ENERGY STARŪ program.

Effective September 2009, for the 2008-09 school year the following Mansfield I.S.D. buildings have met the required guidelines and been awarded the ENERGY STAR award.

  • Roberta Tipps Elementary School
  • Ben Barber Career Tech Academy
  • Glenn Harmon Elementary School
  • Cora Spencer Elementary School
  • Alice Ponder Elementary School
  • Tarver-Rendon Elementary School
  • Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary School
  • Janet Brockett Elementary School
  • J.L. Boren Elementary School
  • Carol Holt Elementary School
The ENERGY STARŪ program has been a tremendous success since its establishment by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1992. The ENERGY STAR program has provided the tools and knowledge for superior energy management within organizations. Using energy more efficiently avoids emissions from power plants, avoids the need for additional power plants, and reduces energy bills. The EPA recognizes buildings that have reduced energy consumption compared to both a baseline year and national averages. To be eligible buildings must be in the top 25 percent of similar existing buildings and comply with HVAC and Indoor Air Quality standards adopted by the EPA.
