February HeartbeatMichael Talley, a custodian at Mary Orr Intermediate School, was named the February 2009 recipient of the MISD Heartbeat Award. District Superintendent Vernon Newsom, along with a small crowd of Orr Intermediate School staff, surprised Michael with the recognition after school on February 27 inside the school's library.

"He is just a model and mentor for our children and for adults," said Orr principal, Alma Martinez when asked why Mr. Talley is deserving of this award. "He always puts others first."

School Bus Safety Speech Contest
Transportation Department

Mansfield High School sophomore, Courtney Dahl, placed first in her grade at the Region XI Annual School Bus Safety Speech Contest held on March 10 at the MISD Transportation Facility.

Students from four districts within Region XI competed in this Texas Association for Pupil Transportation scholarship contest program.  Each researched, composed, and then presented their original speech based on the theme "Big, Yellow and Built to Protect; Safety Features of My School Bus".

We were pleased and excited that our students listed below participated in the Regional Contest:
10th Grade - Courtney Dahl, MHS
12th Grade - Patrick McDonald, MHS

Each of the first place winners (one per grade level) now advance to the State Competition. The state contest will take place in Waco on April 17, 2009.  Also, the four winning speeches will be presented at the ESC Region XI TAPT meeting on March 25 at its monthly meeting in Granbury.

Winners receive recognition, scholarships and/or savings bonds.  Entry is open to any high school student.  Next year, look to apply in January to compete within MISD prior to the Region XI competition.

Mobile Go Center comes to Summit HS
Mobile Go Center

Plans are underway for implementing a college center called the Go Center at Mansfield Summit High School. The Go Center is a project extension of the College for Texans' Campaign which is part of the Closing the Gap initiative per SB 573. This program encourages and provides resources for students to seek out college information and increase student enrollment at higher institutions.  As part of this program, there has been a Mobile Go Center (pictured above) established and this center travels around to schools and communities proving a physical space for students to connect to internet sources and research colleges and financial aid and scholarships.

As part of the Go Center Project, Mansfield Summit High School is scheduling the Mobile Go Center on campus, Wednesday, March 25 from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM. The unit will be set up in the parking lot of the school and students, parents, and teachers, as well as members of the community, will have access to this facility.
