Yellow Buses Go Green

CNG BusesMansfield ISD is taking steps to help the community breathe a little easier with the use of compressed natural gas powered school buses and other cleaner engine technology.

In the continuing effort to provide the best options for school buses to the students and the community, the district sought out and received grant funds to use cleaner and more fuel efficient school buses.

Currently, the district has 20 CNG buses in use with six for more on the way for 2008-2009. These dedicated CNG engines are much more efficient than conversions and extremely reliable.

By the numbers:

2008-2009 school year
Total # of buses - 179
Gasoline - 3
CNG - 26
Diesel - 150

Each CNG powered school bus replaces about 2000 gallons of diesel use each year.

AEC Teacher April Heartbeat Winner
Staff recognition program

HeartbeatKevin Sanders of the MISD Alternative Education Center was presented the April 2008 Heartbeat Team Award on Friday, April 25.  District Superintendent Vernon Newsom surprised Sanders with a cookie bouquet and a Heartbeat Team shirt in a presentation held in Sander's Mathematics classroom.

The selection of Kevin Sanders for the April 2008 Heartbeat Team comes the simple of act of playing basketball with students.

According to nomination information he plays basketball with students from the Alternative Education Center's (AEC) Behavior Intervention Center. Students receive confidence, love, support, happiness and joy from his spending time with them. By taking time out of an already busy schedule for a teacher to connect with students, Sanders instills a sense of attention that these students might not otherwise get on a regular basis.
