Husky Pride sends Principal to Alaska

Thurston in Alaska

The Della Icenhower Intermediate School Huskies take their mascot seriously. The school staff pooled funds together to send their principal, Mr. Duane Thurston, to Anchorage, Alaska for Opening Ceremonies for the 36th running of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Student Minor Procedures Lab @ BBCTA

Ben Barber LabMansfield ISD's Ben Barber Career and Technology Academy took a leap forward with the opening of a new Student Minor Procedures Laboratory, funded with a $25,000 grant from Methodist Mansfield Medical Center. The new lab will ensure health occupation students at Ben Barber get a head start on their medical career.

The lab simulates scenarios students would face if employed in a physician's office or clinic. "We will be able to teach them assessment skills, as well as procedures such as suturing, EKG, and phlebotomy, just to name a few," says Larry Bailey RN, BA, BSN, HSTE, Academy chair for Health Science and Biomedical Technology at BBCTA.

MISD Names Two New Principals
Mansfield Summit High and Cabaniss Elementary

At the February Board Meeting, the MISD Board of Trustees named the principals for Mansfield Summit High School and Louise Cabaniss Elementary School.

Lamar Goree has been named the next principal at Mansfield Summit High School. Goree has 12 total years in education as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal. He is currently the Principal at Mansfield ISD's Danny Jones Middle School.

Gema Padgett will be the first administrator assigned to Cabaniss Elementary. Padgett has 17 total years in education as a teacher and assistant principal and is currently the Thelma Jones Elementary Assistant Principal.

Elementary Schools Jump Rope to Fight Heart Disease

Jump Rope for HeartElementary students learn ways to keep their hearts healthy while raising awareness and funds for the American Heart Association.

Almost all of the 19 Mansfield ISD elementary schools and one intermediate school are taking part in the 2007-2008 Jump Rope For Heart education and fund-raising campaign of the American Heart Association.

On Monday, February 25, Stephanie Milligan, Youth Market Director for the American Heart Association held presentations at J.L. Boren Elementary School as that school's campaign came to a close last week. The presentations included a special demonstration by the Willie Brown Elementary School's Jump Rope Team and a showcasing of the thank-you gifts that students earn by gathering donations.

Last year, J.L. Boren Elementary students raised over $22,000 the the Jump Rope for Heart campaign.
