Sheppard Elementary Gives Mother an Italian Surprise

italian SurpriseA mother of twin third grade students at Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary who was diagnosed with cancer was treated to her own little tour of Italy on Monday, January 14.

Machele Jones was diagnosed with cancer five years ago which has since traveled to many parts of her body. According to doctors, she should be in a wheelchair with little to no function at all.

Through the generosity of her husband's employer, Machele and her family were offered an all-expenses paid trip to anywhere she would like to go. Machele chose Italy, but she was informed by her physicians that her health would prevent her from making the international trip. Office staff, teachers, parents and community members of Mary Jo Sheppard Elementary School decided to help make her dream of an Italian trip a reality.

The campus office was transformed into an Italian escape complete with Cafe La Sheppard where she dined on food donated by Carino's Italian Grill and Bellavita's Italian Restaurant, both of Mansfield along with food from friends and staff.

Grades 3-12 to begin FITNESSGRAM
Fitness assessments to begin February 1

During the Texas 80th Legislative Session, Senate Bill 530 was passed to require fitness assessment for all students in grades 3-12 starting in the 2007-2008 school year. After thorough review, the Texas Education Agency has identified FITNESSGRAM as the assessment tool that will be used by all public school districts.

FITNESSGRAM is a health-related fitness assessment developed by The Cooper Institute for Aerobic research and is a research-based criterion referenced test.

-----
When will the test be administered? Schools will have a two month window period to give the testing. Testing may take place anytime between February 1 through March 28. Schools will be allowed to select the time period best suited for them.
-----

Visit the Physical Education FITNESSGRAM Web page for additional information: Q&A, Letters to parents, and more.
