Thank you for subscribing to the MISD Messenger, your district e-mail information source distributed by the Communications Department.

This e-newsletter is being resent for Quality-Control reasons: a couple of misspellings plus we missed an opportunity to highlight a campus for some great news. Feel free to forward this revised e-mail to others in the district so they too can receive this monthly newsletter and  we apologize for the confusion.

Over 80% of MISD Campuses Receive Gold Performance Acknowledgments

GoldThe Texas Education Agency released its 2006-2007 Gold Performance Acknowledgments (GPA). Mansfield ISD has 80.6 percent of campuses, or 25 of 31 campuses, that earned one or more Gold Performance Acknowledgments.

The Gold Performance Acknowledgment recognizes districts and campuses for high academic performance on various indicators, such as commended performance on Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), college admissions test and Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate (AP/IB) exams. There are 12 different categories in which a GPA can be earned at the district level and 14 different categories at the campus level.

At the district level, Mansfield ISD received Gold Performance Acknowledgments in Reading. This means that at least 25% of MISD students who took the Reading TAKS test scored at the commended level of performance with a scale score at or above 2400. Cross Timbers Intermediate School received the Gold Performance Acknowledgment in ALL areas including "comparable improvement" in Math and Reading.

Cancer Awareness Idea Gift for Mom

Lavender T-Shirt for general cancer awareness

Mansfield senior Preston Nix, channels his love for his mom and his belief in doing something to make a difference into an online cancer awareness t-shirt store.

Q&A with Preston Nix, Mansfield HS senior and founder of www.cancertshirts.org.

What is the basic concept for your t-shirt site?
Well, I sell shirts to raise both awareness and money for cancer research. Most people know that Pink is the color of breast cancer, but not many know that every cancer has a color. So while raising money for cancer research is high on my priority list, letting the world know what cancer has affected which person is the most rewarding. When people see someone wearing a cancer shirt they know the person has been affected by that specific cancer.

Why did you choose to take on this endeavor?
To be honest I don't really feel I chose anything. I feel that when someone is given the idea, know how and resources to do something productive and they don't, that becomes a huge injustice to society.

EPA Names District Energy Star Top Performer

Energy Star

Mansfield ISD was recently named an Energy Star Leader Top Performer by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for superior energy performance.

"By participating in the Energy Star program, Mansfield ISD demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility and to minimizing energy related operational costs to the citizens and taxpayers of the district," noted Director of Facilities and Operations, John Perdue.

To achieve the designation of Top Performer, an organization must demonstrate an energy efficiency rating across a collection of buildings - not just for a single structure - of 75 or higher.

EPA's national energy performance rating system provides a 1-100 score relative to similar buildings throughout the United States, with 50 as the average score. Mansfield ISD buildings have attained Top Performer status, with a score of 89.
