Catherine Stephens named ESL Teacher of the year

ESL Teacher of the Year Catherine Stephens (pictured at right) teaches the Newcomer program for all middle school students in MISD at Rogene Worley Middle School.

She was recently named the 2007 ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher of The Year by the Texas Association of Bilingual Education or TABE.

Ms. Stephens was selected as the Secondary Regional ESL Teacher of The Year for Bilingual Education Association of the Metroplex (BEAM). This honor made Ms. Stephens eligible to be entered in to the TABE Teacher of the Year selection process. She will be presented her award at the TABE Conference in San Antonio this October 3-6.

Laptops distributed for technology certification

Laptop distributionOn Tuesday, September 25, Mansfield ISD surprised nearly 200 teachers with new laptops for classroom use.

The teachers make up the first group in the Mansfield ISD certified through the Texas Teacher Technology Competencies Certification (or Texas TTCC).

The Education Service Centers of Texas joined together to offer this statewide certification program designed to meet the needs of teachers, districts, and the state of Texas to document that teachers have the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate technology into effective instruction in every classroom.

Mansfield ISD has partnered with ESC Region 11 to provide this opportunity to the staff. From April 2003 to April 2007, Mansfield ISD has had 185 staff members earn this certification.

"Our students are 21st century learners and we intend that they be taught by 21st century teachers using 21st century techniques, " says Dr. Claude Cunningham, Associate Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction.

MISD Launches District Blog

Your Mansfield ISD BlogThe Mansfield ISD Department of Communications has a new blog called Your Mansfield ISD.

Moderated by the Director of Communications, Mr. Terry Morawski, Your Mansfield ISD was launched to offer the district community a resource for open, honest opinions and commentary related to the hottest topics and news facing MISD.

"If your home is located within our district boundaries, our schools are your schools, " states a post by Mr. Morawski. "And let's face it - a school district is a large organization with lots of moving parts. It can be intimidating, when you really think about all of the local policy, state and national legislation, etc., that go into our final programs. Our goal with this blog is to simplify many of these complexities and also key you in on many of the great things that are going on."

User feedback is welcomed through the commenting feature enabled within the blog.
