Student Religious Expression Policy

Trustees approved a policy for student religious expression, which all Texas districts are required to do under the new Religious Viewpoints Antidiscrimination Act.
The MISD policy
- is based on one created by the Texas Association of School Boards;
- establishes a limited public forum for students at non-athletic activities of student organizations, fine arts productions and graduation;
- establishes procedures for the identification and selection of speakers at the public forums and the limits on their personal expression;
- reaffirms the District's recognition of students' rights to express their personal opinions;
- reaffirms students' rights to express their viewpoints of a religious nature in the classroom assignments and to organize groups and gatherings of a religious nature; and
- includes a standard disclaimer to be used by the District at graduation and other appropriate activities

Teacher wins 2007 Regional Secondary Teacher of the Year Award
|
Kathy Meek, a reading specialist at T.A. Howard Middle School was
recently named the 2007 Region XI Secondary Teacher of the Year at an
awards banquet. The banquet, held at the Petroleum Club in downtown
Fort Worth and hosted by the Education Service Center Region XI,
recognized all of the teacher of the year winners from school districts
in the north central Texas region.
At Tuesday night's Board meeting, Meek was recognized with a commendation.

MISD Honors Local Media

Eva-Marie Ayala of the Star-Telegram and Nicholas Sakelaris of the
Mansfield News-Mirror were named to the 2007 Media Honor Roll by
Mansfield ISD. Sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards
(TASB), The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide
who deserve recognition for fair and balanced reporting of news about
public schools.

Five Schools Named Energy Star Campuses

The Facilities and Operations Department is pleased to announce five MISD schools have been recognized as Energy Star campuses.
The following campuses and representatives were recognized at the August 28 regular school board meeting:
- Mansfield Summit High School - Donna Grant, Principal
- Cross Timbers Intermediate School - Willie Wimbrey, Assistant Principal
- Kenneth Davis Elementary - Holly Smith, Principal
- Martha Reid Elementary - Elizabeth Hostin, Principal
- T. A. Howard Middle School - Pete Jensen, Assistant Principal & Jimmy Neal, Principal
Through
energy saving initiatives, these five schools reduced the adjusted average
energy use by 6.2% contributing to saving over $76,000 compared to 2004
