HCC Professor Speaks

At United Nations

Laurie Noe

Housatonic Early Childhood Education Program Coordinator Laurie Noe spoke recently at the United Nations building in New York. Addressing a group of more than 650 members of Rotary International, she discussed the Bridgeport area early childhood education community's partnership with counterparts in Rustenburg, South Africa. That partnership saw six members from each area visit the other to study early childhood education practices. As part of the program, South African and American students are studying online together  to improve the quality of early childhood education in both areas.

HCC Faculty, Staff

Radio Talk Show Guests

HCC faculty and staff are regular guests on area radio talk shows. Talk show hosts on radio stations such as WICC, WDJZ and WCUM in Bridgeport, WATR in Waterbury, and WNLK in Norwalk, have turned to HCC for expert commentary and personal insights into the issues of the day. For example, Psychology professor Jack Sopchak and librarian Mark Gore were recent guests on Jim Buchanan's evening drive-time talk show on WICC discussing the riots in the United Kingdom earlier this year. Sopchak probed the causes of the riots while Gore, who was vacationing in London at the time, discussed his experiences there. These types of interviews showcase the expertise of Housatonic's faculty and staff, while positioning HCC as a college populated by experts in a wide variety of fields.

HCC Foundation Gala
A Success

The Housatonic Community College Foundation's fund raising gala was a success. The event, which featured actor, writer, and director Chazz Palminteri, raised almost $100,000 for the Foundation's scholarship fund, which was created to provide financial assistance to deserving students beyond the fundamentals provided by the state. There is still time to make a tax deductible contribution to the Foundation. For more information, contact Maureen Dowdle at 203-332-5078.

English Language

Subject of Lecture

"Shakespeare, English and England" was the subject of a recent talk at the college by History Prof. David Koch. Designed to support the Humanities course in Shakespeare taught by Prof. Geoff Sheehan, the talk offered a historical perspective on the maturation of English and how it reflected the growing dynamism of England during the Elizabethan period. The talk also covered the history of English and how English, unlike many other languages, was directly affected by political events occurring in England and elsewhere in Europe.

HCC President Subject

Of Front-page Article

Housatonic President Anita Gliniecki was the subject of a front-page interview in the weekly Bridgeport News recently. In a wide-ranging article that is essentially an in-depth profile of the college, she mentioned that, even with the new Beacon Hall on the southern perimeter of the campus that opened three years ago, the college is once again pinched for space. The college, she said, hopes to expand by increasing the height and modifying the footprint  of Lafayette Hall, the college's other building.
