Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share with you the Arab Human Rights Fund's inaugural newsletter. Here you will find updates about the Fund, news about our grantees, timely articles about human rights and funding in the Arab Region, and ways to support our work.
2011 has been an exciting period of change for us, both institutionally and regionally. On the home front, we are delighted to report that our staff is growing. Dr. Leila Garbouj joins us as our second Program Officer to lead our new "Countries in Transition" grants focused on Tunisia and Egypt, and Ms. Wadiaa Barakat is the Fund's new Finance Officer. The Fund also will soon be welcoming a new Executive Director and a Fundraising and Communication Officer.
The remarkable changes across the Arab region have been tremendously inspiring. We are committed to doing our very best to support the region's human rights community to meet the challenges ahead.

Grantmaking News
The Fund is pleased to announce the expansion and diversification of its grantmaking program. Moving forward, the Fund will now award grants in three areas:
1. Ongoing Human Rights Grants: Through these grants the Fund continues to provide the much-needed long-term investment in human rights work across the Arab region through twice-annual calls for proposals to support the full spectrum of human rights.
2. Countries in Transition Grants: Starting with Tunisia and Egypt, these grants are focused on supporting efforts to bring about successful transitions.
3. Emergent Opportunities Grants: These grants provide support to groups directly engaged in creating, expanding and protecting political space across the region.
