Greetings!

Hard to believe September is almost over.  Still feels like summer here in Alberta although there is fresh snow on the mountains.  It's been a busy fall.  I have been doing workshops with Biathlon, Skating and Golf.  I was at the Biathlon time trials in Canmore on a smoking hot day which was a real test of endurance for the athletes!  I have had the privelege of working with Frank van den Berg from the Canadian Sports Center and using his assessment tool "Mental Skills Inventory for Sports".  This is a fantastic resource which helps athletes, coaches and Mental trainers  identify Mental Skills that a specific athlete could work on to improve and attain their Ideal Performance State (IPS) and then access Performance on Demand.
I had the pleasure of golfing in the "9th Annual Golf With an Olympian" tournament last week to raise funds for the Canadian Sports Center Calgary.Olympic Athletes Great turnout, great job by the Sports Center crew, Casey, Jess etc. and all the athletes who came out!  Been doing lots of hiking, playing a lot of golf, enjoying life on our new deck.  Check out the pics on Facebook.
My office sessions and Skype sessions are always busy but would love to work with more!
Cheers,
Jan

Learning to love the battle! Article - Loving to win is easy but elite athletes must learn to love the battle!

Loving to win is easy, but elite, successful athletes have learned to love the battle!

In the heat of competition athletes will break down at their weakest component whether it be mentally, physically or technically.  For example, in Golf if putting is the weakest part of your game that is precisely what will go sideways once the pressure mounts.  In Figure Skating, if your fitness level is not quite there you will lose the energy required to complete the long program and all its elements.  In any sport if you are emotionally distracted, or in a negative thought pattern, your mental toughness will break down.

The best athletes have learned to channel positive thoughts, confidence and calmness.  They see competing as stimulating rather than threatening!  They LOVE the battle and respond to the pressure with a sense of challenge.  They love competing almost as much as winning.   They know that if they compete hard the rest will take care of itself.
