Core Leader Profile
Colleen Bailey, Executive Director Ntl. Steinbeck Center
Meet Colleen Bailey
Current Position:  Executive Director of the National Steinbeck Center
Number of years in your field:  I've been in this position since December of 2009, but I have worked for the National Steinbeck Center since April of 2008.
What's the most rewarding part of your job?   I am so proud to serve such a broad spectrum of the Monterey County community:  children, adults and seniors from every walk of life and from all over the county.  The National Steinbeck Center has really become a central gathering place for the community to celebrate arts and culture and to share the stories of the people of Monterey County.
What is the most challenging part of your job?   We have so many wonderful ideas of how we can improve what we do, but are always challenged by limited resources.  The arts are often the first thing to be cut, even though many would argue that the arts are even more essential in trying times because they bring people together and help us to imagine a better future.
These are tough times. What keeps you going?   I truly believe that arts and culture are absolutely essential to one's quality of life.  Every time I hear of another after school program that has lost funding, or an artist who has left town because of the lack of work, I feel even more committed to my work.  We just can't depend that these services will exist for the next generation if we don't accept the personal responsibility for ensuring that they do.
What do you like to do when you're not working?    Not working?  Hmmm.  I have an incredibly supportive husband, a beautiful five year old daughter and a 4 month old puppy who I give all of my attention to when I'm not working.  We love to take full advantage of this beautiful area.  We spend time hiking in the mountains of Carmel Valley, or walking Carmel Beach.  When we can, we love to travel.  That is a real treat.
What do you value about nonprofits?   I have found that people who work in non-profits are heart-driven.  They have to think about the bottom line like every other business person, but their first thought is always to their mission and the people they serve.
Why are you a member of NAMC?   I'm a great believer in the adage that the rising tide lifts all boats.  I have always worked closely with organizations within my particular sector, but have learned a lot from those people who work in non profits outside of arts and culture.  We have many similar issues.  I have also realized several opportunities that have been a direct result of my work with this organization that might never have developed otherwise.  For example, the National Steinbeck Center recently hosted the CCCIL (Central Coast Center for Independent Living) PhotoVoice exhibition, and brought a new audience to the Center, while helping CCCIL better serve its community.

Nonprofit Compensation & Benefit Survey
Contribute to this important regional tool

It's 2012!  Time to Participate in "Fair Pay for Northern California Nonprofits: the 2012 Compensation and Benefits Survey", the best survey of its kind in the country!

431 agencies, reporting on over 23,000 jobs, participated in the 2011 survey, making it the largest and most comprehensive report in the survey's 33-year history.

As a 2012 survey participant, you'll be in good company.

Consider this:

  • 327, or 76%, of the 431 organizations who participated in the 2011 survey purchased the survey report.
  • 267 agencies participated in both the 2010 and 2011 surveys.

Here's how your organization can benefit from what NCA considers to be the best survey of its kind in the country:

  • The survey report will help your organization determine what salaries and benefits you'll need to offer to attract and retain the best staffers.
  • It will help your organization find out how the local nonprofit community is coping with the continuing recession.
  • The report is also a primary tool to help your board of directors document for the IRS the rationale they use to set the salaries they pay their executives.

If you don't already have a copy of the 2011 survey report, you can now take advantage of our annual 2 for 1 recession buster offer.  You can purchase the 2011 report at 50% off, if at the same time you prepay for the 2012 survey at the discounted participant rate.

To participate in the 2012 survey, and order the 2011 survey report (if you don't already have it), visit www.nonprofitcomp.com.  Deadline to participate has been extended to March 26th.

We are sad to report the passing of community activist and leader, Joey Lasnik. Among Joey's many contributions were her leadership of the Alliance on Aging, Meals on Wheels of the Salinas Valley, Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast, Women For Women, Hartnell College Board of Trustees, and the Monterey County Commission on the Status of Women, among many others. Joey blazed many trails, including being the first woman appointed to chair the Monterey County Grand Jury. A celebration of her life was held at Hartnell College on January 27.
