| Winter Weather ~ Snow Day? | |
Winter weather has arrived! Trying to make sense of all the hype, track snow closures and keep the kids entertained can be confusing when the flakes start to fall. Here are a variety of resources to help keep you in the know this winter!
SchoolReport.org
Closure information is available at: www.schoolreport.org. You can also sign up for automatic emails from schoolreport.org. These emails are tied directly to the school closure and late start media broadcast system. We will use this system to broadcast emergency or safety related messages for individual schools and the district.
Additional Winter Weather Info
** Mercer Island School District (MISD) website:
http://www.misd.k12.wa.us/news/districtnews/emergency.html
** MISD Emergency Information Message: 206-236-3366
** 11-12 Emergency Information (pdf) includes bus schedule information for one hour and two hours late starts, and a list of radio and TV stations that will broadcast emergency announcements.

Hand In Hand Auction | | |
Why Host an Auction?
Some parents, especially new to Island Park, may be wondering why the Hand-in-Hand Auction is considered such a big event. What many don't realize is that our Hand-in-Hand program is unique to Island Park, and the responsibility for funding the 6 paraprofessional positions belongs to our school community. An auction is much more fun than a phone-a-thon, makes for a great community-building event and gives parents the chance to bid on some fantastic items.
This year we are very fortunate to have the Girl Scout troop offer Kid's Night Out for the evening, which makes attending even easier! If you did not receive your invitation last week in your child's backpack, contact Molly Fort: mollytroy@msn.com or go download and send in an RSVP form. Remember, only two more weeks to send in your procurement forms. The planning committee has such a great evening lined up and is looking forward to seeing everyone there! Now meet another one of our talented HiH paraprofessionals, Crystal Taitague:

Crystal Taitague, 5th Grade Co-Parapro
Crystal Taitague is one of our newest HIH Paraprofessionals at Island Park, having fallen in love with our school when her oldest daughter started kindergarten last year. She is a certified teacher who wanted to get more involved and loves her job helping kids each day, even if just by greeting off the bus and making sure they are smiling on their way to class. In addition to working as one of our 5th grade HIH paraprofessionals, Crystal is also a lead singer in an Island sound band.
Missed the previous featured parapros? Meet them here.

| Class of 2019 Sweatshirt Order Forms! | | Attention 5th Grade Parents! Order by Jan 27th!
Our kids are the Mercer Island High School graduating class of 2019! The Class of 2019 sweatshirt order form came home with your child sometime the week of January 16th and is due on January 27th. The front of the sweatshirts will have the names of all fifth graders from MI's three elementary schools along with their graduating year. It's been a tradition to have friends and teachers autograph them on the back. These sweatshirts will be part of the "uniform" used by the IMS band next year.
The signed sweatshirt order forms are necessary to give permission for your student's name to be included. In addition, the sweatshirts will be worn in the class photo which will appear in the yearbook. Return the order form to your child's teacher or email it to Susie Stenberg at stenbergfamily@comcast.net.

| NEW! Mindful Parenting Group | | Tue, Jan 31, from 7-8pm in the Island Park Library
Have you heard all the buzz about mindfulness lately? Ever wondered what it was & why everyone is talking about it? Come find out! Join Sivie Suckerman (school counselor) and fellow Island Park families, as we explore how mindfulness can help our children become more thoughtful, resilient, and empathetic.
We'll discuss & practice research-based techniques that have been proven to help children cultivate life-skills, such as how to soothe and calm themselves during stressful times, improve focus and concentration, strengthen their ability to think, plan & organize, and develop compassion for themselves & others.
First meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 31st from 7-8 pm in the Island Park Library. Please contact Catheryne Nguyen at catheryne.nguyen@gmail.com to register.

| Volunteers needed to help new ELL families at Island Park | | Speak a second (or third) language? We need your help!
The ELL parent group is seeking language volunteers to help new international families at Island Park. Every year Island Park attracts many families from foreign countries for our ELL program. Many of these families are not fluent in English, and require a lot of language assistance especially in the first days of school. We are seeking volunteers who speak a foreign language who can help these new families with registration, filling out the parent pack, volunteer training, new families orientation, and most of all, bridging cultural differences. We will offer a simple training session for this purpose. This is a great way to get to know the new families, as well as the other existing international families at IP.
If you are interested, or know of anyone who may be a good fit, please contact Yasuko Elison at yasuko.elison@gmail.com and let me know which language you / they speak. Questions are most welcome too. Thank you and I look forward to hear from you!
