Chicago - Part 2

In Chicago I was paired up to share a hotel room with an amazing gal, and Pilates teacher from Baltimore.   You just never know how things will go when you get paired anonymously with someone.  Thankfully, and gratefully, She and I hit it off as though we had been friends since childhood.  A friend for life now, our chance meeting brought a huge amount of joy to the already amazing conference.

After ordering room service breakfast, deciding what to wear, and getting ready for a long day we headed downstairs for our first mat class of the day.   Dana Santi, a second generation teacher from the Chicago area, taught us one of the, if not the, hardest mat class that I have ever done.  It had all of the super advanced exercises, and was quick, rigorous, and her cues took my body to places that I didn't think possible.  What a start to the day!

After the mat class, I headed to my first workshop with the wonderful Jay Grimes.  Jay trained with Joseph and Clara Pilates.  The focus of this workshop was the chairs.  We worked on the High Electric Chair (yes! just like Martha in studio!), the baby arm chair and the Wunda chair.  This was my first time working on the baby arm chair aside from in my lesson with Peter Fiasca the day before. This is a lesser used piece of apparatus, but WOW.  I cannot wait to add more toys to the studio!   Jay is an excellent, no nonsense teacher.  He peppers his teaching with stories of Joe's original studio, and rants on the state of Pilates today.

After Chairs with Jay, I returned to another workshop with him, 'The Mat Breakdown'.  This class was all about how Joe taught the work to beginners.  He never 'modified' or 'made it easier'.  The exercises are the exercises.  However, he used a lot of other ways to reach into the bodies that were not as physically capable to start with.  Joseph Pilates was not a gentle or an easy teacher.   Hooray for Authentic Pilates!

Before I got to eat my lunch, I had a workshop with Dana Santi, and many other studio owners that was all about the business end of things.  It was great to talk to studio owners from all over the world about how they do things, the way the run their studios, how they market themselves etc.   Come to find out, we are doing just great!!

A quick lunch, and then into the final workshop of the day.  The Cadillac with Brooke Siler.  What a teacher!  She is so funny, in how she teachers, and as I said in the last newsletter, she has a great pair of hands.  During these workshops they call on us to be the 'body' for many exercises.  I jumped at the chance every time I could as this is the best way to learn.  During this workshop I was the 'body' for an exercise known as 'Tower'.  She showed us some fabulous ways to get the juice out of this exercise, and how to make it work really well for people who are very tight.  She also took liberty to stand on my legs to help to get the 'juice' out of me. Sounds frightening right?  It was actually fantastic!

The day ended with Kathi Ross-Nash teaching a butt-kicking super advanced Mat class to the University of Chicago football team.  Only one of them had ever done Pilates before, and that was Kathi's son.  What a sight!  Those boys had people standing on their stomachs for the Hundred, they did all the exercises (each had a teacher at their side to assist with spotting etc), sweat more than you can imagine and had FUN!  All of them agreed that it was by far the hardest workout they had ever done.  A few phone calls the next day let us know that they were very sore too!  Hooray!

Saturday evening continued with a meet and great supper, and then moved to the hotel bar where there was a great little band, lots of drinks and dancing and fun fun fun until well into the 'morning'.  7am came early on Sunday, but as my mother has always said, if you are going to hoot with the owls at night, you have to be able to soar with the eagles in the morning!

Once again I will say,  If it isn't Authentic, it isn't Pilates.  Period.  I have more enthusiasm than ever to share this with all of you as many of you have no doubt experienced since I have been home.

I am looking forward to working with all of these teachers again in the near future as I have a trip planned to NYC in August.  Exciting!

Stay tuned for the next newsletter to read the final entry of my fabulous trip!

- Cara
