.Greetings!
Happy April!
A white Easter? That was really something! We didn't even have a white Christmas this year! In any case, hopefully the weather is now going to trend upwards and give us some warm sunny days. My family ventured to Bar Harbor for the Easter weekend and enjoyed hiking, running, biking, rock climbing, playing on the beach (fully dressed in winter clothes!) eating at local restaurants and resting. What better way to love your body than to keep it BUSY?!
The studio is busy this spring, and that is a great sign that Fredericton is well on its way to being more healthy than ever! Please let me know if you are having a hard time getting into classes or finding a class on the schedule that meets your needs. The best way for you to get what you need from our studio is to keep us informed to your wants and desires!
The Saturday class has been a hit so that will be staying on the schedule. We have also added back the 7am Apparatus class on Wednesday mornings. Now that we have early morning daylight, I'm not so afraid of coming in!
The participants of the Pilates30 Program are seeing great improvements in their bodies over the last three weeks. Most of them have completed 10-12 classes thus far so are about 1/3 of the way though. They are FEELING better, taller, stronger, and more confident in their day to day life! Isn't that FABULOUS?
In this issue, another great article from our health expert Dr. Kelly! She talks about the effects that our Mental state has on our health. How we can 'think our selves healthy'!
I have also added in an article from a great website on healthy living (link below) about one of my favorite (fruits?) the Avocado! As a bonus, I've also added my personal Guacamole recipe that is always a hit!
I have an exciting trip coming up the first weekend in May. I will be celebrating International Pilates Day with Jay Grimes, a Pilates Master Teacher who was trained my Joseph Pilates himself! The Chicago Pilates Conference is a world class event hosted by several of the top Pilates teachers in the world including Jay Grimes, Peter Fiasca, Kathy Ross-Nash, Brooke Siler, Mari Winsor, Chris Robinson and more! I have a private lesson scheduled with one of my idols, Peter Fiasca. This is akin to having a hockey lesson with Wayne Gretzky!
Don't forget to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook! Links below!

Mind Body Connections:
Think yourself in to good health!
By: Dr. Kelly Vanslyke
Sometimes we forget that our mind and body are so interconnected that we can literally think ourselves sick ( or healthy!) One of the focuses at our office is "Think Well", and this can sometimes raise eyebrows. Most people understand how a physical trauma or a physical stress (sitting too long, lack of exercise, trauma) and how a chemical stress (like smoking) will spiral your health downwards. Well, guess what? Your thoughts can cause a downward spiral of illness as well! Let's try an experiment. Please think about something stressful. Maybe you have experienced something recently - think back to that moment. How did it make you feel? What physical changes did you experience? I for one can tell you I feel my heart start to race, my face start to flush, my blood pressure start to rise and I get jittery! I feel like I am ready to pounce! Now, let's do a more enjoyable exercise. Think of a time where you felt at your best, not a fear in the world! Life was so great and you just wanted time to stop! What physical changes did you experience? The first thing I notice is that I can take a deep breath, my mind is focused and clear, my heart slows down....my whole world slows down! ahhh! In both situations, your physiology responds to the environment. The trouble is, most of us are emotionally stressed for longer periods of time (chronically) and our bodies attempt to adapt to this long term stress. We are no longer aware of the physiological changes that occur because "stressed" becomes the new normal. We learn to ignore the rapid heart rate, the high blood pressure, the buildup of stress hormones, anxiety, sleep deprivation, etc, etc. Chronic emotional stress is a killer - it leads to things like high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancers, poor relationships, depression, poor self-esteem - only to name a few. The standard treatment of these conditions include drugs which work on trying to change your physiology, but, as you can see, most cases are not the fault of genes or body malfunction; they are largely due to the chronically stressful environment that we put ourselves in! It is very important to help people understand and discover where the stress is coming from, so they are empowered to correct the CAUSE of the problem, instead of masking the problem with a drug that allows them to keep mal-functioning in the stressful environment (not to mention the long list of potential side effects of each medication). This is not to say that drugs are never necessary, in some cases they might be, but if the cause is a stressful environment then medication will never address the cause. At our office, we define 3 categories of stress: Physical, Chemical, and Emotional. Any or all of these 3 stressors can affect your physiology and put stress on the nervous system causing spinal misalignment (subluxation) and interference of the body's ability to send and receive messages to and from the brain. Chiropractors work with the person to help minimize lifestyle stressors, and take the stress away from the nervous system (correct the subluxations) through spinal re-alignment so the body will regulate and heal more optimally. Patients under regular chiropractic care can experience a wide array of health benefits including lower blood pressure, better sleep patterns, higher levels of energy, greater ability to focus, less pain - just to name a few. Our challenge for you this week is to listen to your body and work on becoming more mindful. A great place to start is a mindful walk. Quiet your mind, be aware of the present moment and steer your thoughts away from the past or future. Enjoy the NOW! Focus on your breath, your steps, your surroundings, the sun on your face - heighten your 5 senses. Being in tune with your body will allow you to pick up on your body's physiological responses due to your environmental surroundings. It will allow you to take a deep breath in stressful situations and slow things down. It will also allow you to think before reacting to situations - which usually leads to a more appropriate outcome. Controlling your thoughts and your mind will benefit your whole body! The more positive an outlook a person has in all aspects of life, and the more control they have over their emotions - the healthier the mind-body connection!

Avocados are rich in vitamins A, C, and E and are full of other nutrients like potassium. They contain folate, monosaturated fats and antioxidants. Regular consumption of avocados helps us in many ways. Here are just 10 of them.
 1. The monosaturated fats in avocados not only help in reducing LDL cholesterol but are also good for the heart. Avocado also lowers the triglycerides in the blood and thus is useful for diabetic patients. 2. Avocado contains 30% more potassium than banana. The high potassium content helps in regulating blood pressure and prevents circulatory diseases. 3. Avocados are good for pregnant women since the high folate content in them helps in the development of brain and other tissues of the baby. The B6 vitamin in these fruits may help in reducing nausea that is associated with pregnancy. 4. Avocado contains carotenoid lutein. Lutein keeps the eyes safe from oxidative stress, macular degeneration, and cataracts. 5. Avocados have numerous phytonutrients which not only prevent prostate cancer but also repair the damaged cells. 6. Many studies have shown that avocado can inhibit the growth of cancerous cells without damaging the healthy cells. The oleic acid in this fruit is effective in preventing breast cancer. 7. It is a powerhouse of vitamin E which protects our skin from free radicals. 8. Avocado is very effective in stopping bad breath. It also reduces the risk of oral cancer. 9. Being rich in antioxidants, avocado is helpful in preventing aging symptoms. The glutathione in avocado boosts immune systems, slows the aging process, and encourages a healthy nervous system. 10. The nutrients and enzymes in avocado soothes the condition of inflamed mucous lining in the stomach and small intestines. It also improves the body's ability to absorb carotenoids and nutrients. |

Cara's Fabulous Guacamole!
Ingredients:
2 ripe avocados mashed 1 plum tomato finely chopped Juice from 1 lime 2 (or more!) cloves of fresh garlic
When you serve it in a bowl, be sure to save a pit and display it on top. A friend recently showed me that this keeps your guacamole from going brown!
You can use this as a spread on sandwiches, as a dip for veggies or rice crackers or to garnish your dinner! Enjoy!!
