Germs, Holiday Survival, Gift Ideas, and MORE!
mo enduro
11 (plus Carol and Cara) happy and tired gals after Movembers Enduro class!

 Mo Mo Ho Ho!!

Well, Movember is nearly over, and women everywhere are looking forward to seeing the men in their life with a clean shaven face again.  Our Movember classes have been a great success with men making big steps in the right direction for a change in their health and exercise programs.

I had suggested a hefty goal of $1000 for Prostate Cancer Research, and we unfortunately have not met that.  However, we are over $200 and we feel that every little bit counts.  We'll try again next year and hope for more!!

Ahem.  I don't really want to mention it, but the Holiday Season is upon us!  Christmas and New Year parties, family gatherings and office lunches all add up to over eating, under exercising and feeling a little squishy.    I've listed a few tips below to ease the pain!

Drs. Kelly and Jay have written a very timely article for this edition of the news letter.   Do you wonder if germs cause sickness?  Have you wondered why there is a flu 'season'?   Read below for answers to those questions and more!

Briefly in other news, the January - June schedule is up with some fun new classes.   Be sure to register now for your classes as some times are already filling up!   You know it will be BUSY in January!

Kelly is heading to Boston again next weekend for another session with Clare Dunphy on the road to her certification.  She has been working hard in studio taking lots of classes and working with me and Carol.   We'll be putting a practice teaching schedule up for her in the coming weeks.

Carol is starting to get busy with private clients which is very exciting.  She is an excellent teacher, and we are just so lucky to have her.   Aside from having a keen eye for movement, and a fabulous sense of humour, she can make you work your butt with a smile on your face!  That is my kind of gal!

I am nearly done this terms Kinesiology course with my exam on December 10th. I am also registered for another course in January.   It won't be long and my degree will be complete!  No other studio has as much expertise in Bio-Mechanics, Anatomy, Physiology and of course Pilates as Precision Pilates does!   I am also nearly 100% booked (almost 40 teaching hours per week!) from now until the end of December!    If you were thinking about getting a private lesson or two before the holidays, let me know soon!

Why would you go anywhere else for Pilates?!

Yours in Health,

Do Germs Make You Sick?

Are germs to blame for cold and flu season OR are weakened immune systems?!

It's flu season. Did you ever wonder why there is a season for the flu? Where does the flu go in the summer? Do we suddenly see a rise in germs and bugs during this time leading to more exposure? Why is it that some people are always sick, and others are never sick?

The following - all weaken our immune system hence increasing our risk of getting sick:

1. The
issue of Vitamin D deficiency as a major factor in immune system related illnesses ranging from seasonal cold and flu, to heart disease, to cancer, etc. has received a lot of attention in the last few years. Industrialized humans are severely deficient in Vitamin D and that this deficiency is a major contributing factor to illness and lack of health and vitality. There are literally thousands of peer-reviewed scientific articles establishing vitamin D deficiency as a significant causal factor in serious illnesses. At this point we can confidently state that having sufficient levels of vitamin D is essential for both wellness and prevention.

North Americans are deficient in Vitamin D due to shorter sunlight exposure and weak UV index during the fall, winter and spring months. Vitamin D seems to play a large role when it comes to many body functions, including the immune system performance. Daily dosage should be between 1,000 - 6,000 IU during those 'D deficient' months, depending on your age, body weight, etc; note that this is much more than the 400 IU once thought to be adequate.

We must consider all nutrient deficiencies that directly affect the ability of our immune system to work properly to fight off common "germs".   We should all consume a wide variety of vegetables and fruit to ensure we are not deficient in any genetically essential nutrients.

2. Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas, Other Holidays = over eating, too much sugar and alcohol. What you eat will have a direct impact on your health. You ARE what you eat! Tis the season for all the "good stuff". Our toxic bodies now must deal with our overindulgence, weakening our immune systems - making us more likely to get sick.

3. Moods are down, energy is low, exercise decreases! Our mental health and physical health play a major role in our body's ability to function and regulate normally. This negatively impacts our immune system defence! Participate in winter activities (indoors and outdoors) that you enjoy, this will give you the boost you need!

4. Physical, chemical and emotional stressors will directly impact our nervous systems causing disturbances in the messages that are being sent back and forth from the brain and body (Subluxations). Subluxations directly affect the way our body functions and if left uncorrected, will lead to decreased health. Regular Chiropractic care has been researched to boost immune function (amongst other benefits) up to 400%! How? Because the nervous system directly controls the immune system!

So do germs cause sickness? NO! Weak immune systems do!

The way I see it, you can target specific symptoms or specific diseases through toxic chemicals OR the way we teach at our office - do the things we know will create health. Having better overall health will protect you from all disease, widespread wellness and prevention!

Be Fit. Eat Right. Think Well. Get Adjusted.  These four ingredients practiced regularly will improve your overall health and will significantly reduce your risk of illness and disease!

What a great investment!

Holiday Season Survival!

There is no question that the Holidays are fun but exhausting.   On the upside, we get to spend quality time with our family, eat great food and not work much.  On the down side, we get to spend quality time with family, eat TOO much food and not work(out) enough!

I've listed just a few little tips to help get you though the next 5 weeks without adding pounds, getting sick, or run down.

1.  Maintain your routines including sleep, activity, eating and fun.  Even if it was a late night, be sure to go out to your Pilates class or the gym in the morning if you normally do.   You will feel better for it! On the nights you aren't partying or visiting, go to bed a little early.   Keep some almonds or fruit handy or at the office to snack on before heading to that after hours party starving!

2.  Up your water intake!  We will be consuming extra salts, fats, alcohol and sugars over the next 5 weeks.  Be sure to get your daily recommended (as discussed in a previous newsletter) water and a little bit extra to keep your system happy!

3. Got the munchies?  Snack on hummus, veggies, cheeses and fruit at the holiday parties instead of sweets, salts, fats and others.   Of course that doesn't mean that you can't have any yummy treats... but perhaps 4 is too many in one night?

4.  Consider giving the gift of health to a friend or co-worker.  Here are some suggestions:

a) A Gift Certificate to Precision Pilates!!!

b) Recipe book for easy and healthy family meals (slow cooker recipes rock!)

c) Offering to babysit for an afternoon so they could go to Pilates, skiing, or snow shoeing!

Effective now, Precision Pilates is enforcing the class cancellation policy.

A reminder for everyone that it is studio policy to take a class off your package if you have not cancelled your spot in class.

Due to many classes now having wait lists, if you do not cancel your space, others can not attend class.

You can cancel via the online software, send us an email, give us a call or text our phone number.   We do understand that sometimes there are circumstances beyond your control.  If this is the case, let us know.

Thank you!
