Arthritis and Your Spine
By: Dr.Jay and Dr. Kelly
Your doctor says you have osteoarthritis in your spine and you start to wonder how it got there. Was it from the physical stress of your job? Is it the 15 years of running? Or maybe it is blamed on just being old...
Spinal degeneration/osteoarthritis has very little to do with how old you are, as we see it in spines of all ages. Also, all of the spinal segments in a person's body are the SAME AGE, so why are some joints wearing down faster than others?
When it comes to arthritis/degeneration, it's not so much about what you DID or how old you are, but more about what you HAVEN'T BEEN DOING. There are ingredients required for joints to be healthy. Proper nutrition/supplementation is important, but even more important is proper movement and proper alignment! When a vertebra is out of alignment or is lacking movement, that segment will wear and tear much quicker than others in the surrounding area. The misaligned area can start to degenerate and interfere with the exiting nerve and affect every tissue that is connected to that nerve (muscles, organs, glands, etc). This condition is called 'Vetebral Subluxation' and can have a significant impact on a person's health and wellness. Chiropractors detect and correct subluxation with a safe and proven technique called the 'Chiropractic Adjustment'.
Blaming activities or age for your arthritis is like blaming the sidewalk for scuffing your shoes. Things are going to wear and tear slightly when you use them over time, including your spine.
Here's the good news: with the right ingredients - degeneration of the spine can be prevented, slowed or reversed (depending on the severity). How? Through regular Chiropractic Adjustments. In addition, regular exercise (including Pilates) and proper nutrition play an important role in maintaining spinal and overall health.
