Springing into April!
Although Spring officially arrived a couple of weeks ago, I tend to not expect too much until April.  Well here we are!  Warmer weather, more daylight and lots of MUD.  A surprise snow storm or two to remind us that mother nature is in charge, and then we get to run fully into.... bug season!  Ahhhhh the Maritimes!

I just got back from 2 days of training at Progressive Bodyworks with Clare Dunphy.   Clare is a 2nd generation teacher and with little doubt, one of the leading instructors in the field.   I am feeling refreshed in my teaching, a little sore from all the 'fun' and am paying it forward in the studio.

In this newsletter we have an article written by local Physiotherapist Jenny Irving.   An avid gardener, Jenny gives us some tips to easing your body back into the soil and greens.   With Jenny's great tips, and the fabulous posture you get from Pilates classes, your summer garden is sure to be a success!

Carol Illsley has complete the first stage of her certification and her practice schedule is online.  More information about that is below.

In the next issue we will be hearing from Julie Atkinson, registered dietitian and Joanne Barna, owner of Aesthetics by Joanne.   Vitamin D will be the hot topic!

New classes will be hitting the schedule at the end of the month and there will be some exciting events happening in May!  Stay tuned!

Yours in Health,

S.M.A.R.T Gardening

By: Jenny Irving, M. Sc. PT

Spring has sprung!  With the beginning of longer days and warmer weather people are starting to think about getting outside and gardening.  The Canadian Physiotherapy Association recommends S.M.A.R.T. gardening to have a safe and enjoyable gardening season:

S- Stretch Before, During, and After Gardening

First warm up your muscles by getting your tools out and walking around the garden planning your session before stretching.  Remember to hold your stretch for at least 15 seconds without bouncing.  Repeat each stretch 2-3 times.

For helpful pictures of gardening stretches please visit: Canadian Physiotherapy Association

M- Move today for Tomorrow

Keeping active with gardening is great exercise.  Make sure you are lifting with your knees and bending keeping your back straight.  Working outside your comfort zone can lead to sprains and strains.

A- Add it up

Gradually try to increase your gardening time.  Start with 10 minutes and work your way up.  Aim for at least 60 minutes of movement per day.

R- Reduce Strain

Use tools that are right for you.  Let wheelbarrows and extendable handles on tools ease your load.

T- Talk to a physiotherapist

Physiotherapists not only treat injuries but are also able to teach you how to prevent injuries and pain from developing.  If you are finding your row tough to hoe please contact a local physiotherapist for advice.

Introducing Carol Illsley!!!!

I first met Carol nearly 2 years ago.   She started attending regular classes and private lessons and was hooked on Pilates almost instantly.  Carol is a fabulous gal with a great sense of humor and quick wit.  She and I became fast friends and I am absolutely thrilled that she has decided to go on this journey toward becoming a Pilates Teacher.

Carol is a true believer in the Classical Pilates Method, having experienced the enormous benefits in her own life;  being in a motorcycle accident over 20 years ago and having tried countless types of therapies and programs to deal with the long term injuries, Pilates was the first thing that really made a difference in her body and daily life.

Carol was in Boston the last week of March for the first stage towards her Level 1 Peak Pilates teacher certification.  Carol is training at the same centre that I did and is ready to do some practice teaching.

You will be seeing her at the studio a fair bit doing some observation, and getting her feet wet.   Her practice schedule for April and early May is on the website under the 'Carol's Training' tab. You will have to scroll through the calendar to see her classes starting on April 18th.   There are about a half a dozen times currently posted and you can sign up for any of them.  The cost will be $8 per class.

I also want to encourage you to try a private lesson with Carol.  The classical training in Boston is for the Mat, Reformer and Cadillac Towers.  She has been teaching me since her return from Boston on all of the apparatus and I recommend her to all of you!!   Contact me if you would like to schedule a private lesson with her.   The cost will be $25 taxes included.

Do you have an iPhone or iPod?

Precision Pilates online scheduling software has an app that allows you to see our daily class schedules!  How convenient is THAT?!

Go to the 'app store' and search for the 'mindbody Pilates' FREE app.

A Pilates Family Tree

Pilates Lineage

The Pilates 'Elders' are first generation instructors who were some of Joseph Pilates original students.  These students went on to teach his method to others.  This lineage is important to uphold the method and to keep it 'clean' without interference from other modalities such as yoga and dance.

A short list of about 10 or so, these elders opened their own studios and shared with others the incredible body of work that Joseph Pilates created.   Some remained true to his work, and some changed it by adding in other movement practices or leaving out important pieces of the work.

Of these elders, Romana Krysanowska, Jay Grimes, Lolita San Miguel, Mary Bowen, and Lawrence Hayward stayed true to Joe's work and passed down what we know as 'Classical or Traditional' Pilates.   Studios that stay true to the real Pilates Method are few and far between, and the training centers for these teachers are even harder to come by.

Most Classical instructors know their lineage and share the method as it has been handed down.  I am a third generation instructor having been trained by second generation instructors who received their training from Elders Romana Krysanowska,  and Lolita San Miguel.      This is an incredible privilege for me in many ways.  The education is second to none, the 'family' is a tight knit bunch, and the peak into Joe's life with stories oral and written is fascinating.

I am so pleased to be able to share this with all of you.
