FYMFor Your Marriage

When the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a Christian vocation it is saying that the couple's relationship is more than simply their choice to enter a union which is a social and legal institution.

The sacraments make Christ present in our midst. Like the other sacraments, marriage is not just for the good of individuals, or the couple, but for the community as a whole. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage between two baptized persons is a sacrament. The Old Testament prophets saw the marriage of a man and woman as a symbol of the covenant relationship between God and his people. The permanent and exclusive union between husband and wife mirrors the mutual commitment between God and his people. The Letter to the Ephesians says that this union is a symbol of the relationship between Christ and the Church.

JFIJustice for Immigrants

On March 26, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) filed an amicus curiae ("friend of the court") brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the matter of Arizona v. United States. The issue before the Supreme Court concerns whether the State of Arizona has the authority under the Constitution to implement certain elements of SB 1070, the state immigration law passed in 2010.

In the brief, the USCCB argues that the federal government should maintain full authority to enact and implement immigration law because it is in the best position to reconcile competing objectives of the law. USCCB maintains that traditional principles such as family unity and human dignity, principles supported in federal immigration law, would be undermined by the Arizona law, which takes an enforcement-only approach to immigration. The brief also argues that the Arizona law and similar state laws impinge upon the Church's ability to provide pastoral and social service care to undocumented immigrants, amounting to an infringement upon religious freedom.
