Future stock
I can be bought. Yeah, kind of stunned me too. But, apparently, my company at lunch is worth something when the beneficiary is a worthy charity auction. As a result, last week, I had the honor of accompanying seven-year-old Emily Derrick (and her father, Tony) to lunch at Marshall's Barbecue where, amidst the conversation and the brisket and sauce, I had a couple of revelations. First, in taking stock of the leaders of tomorrow, our future is in good hands with the likes of Emily Derrick, and her colleagues, at the wheel. In addition to being very well-mannered, Emily was inquisitive. This is no surprise from a young lady in the dual language program at Janie Stark, whose favorite subject is math and who has already embarked on a theatre career with parts in "Annie" and the Firehouse Theatre's "Christmas Celebration." In between these other interests, she plays soccer. Beyond conversation about the job of the City Manager, there were questions about current City issues. Emily is familiar with the planning that has been taking place for a possible new aquatics center and had questions about that. Also, she's keeping up on Shops at Branch Crossing news, wanting to know when we expected Panda Express to be open. But, beyond Emily providing me with a great deal of comfort in our leaders of the future, it occurred to me that the future is now. Emily was a toddler when I started as City Manager in Farmers Branch five years ago. Five years from now, she and her friends will be teenagers, starting to think about college. And, just that quickly, Emily will be at Marshall's having lunch with the next generation coming up. All the more reason we've got to make every day count while its our watch, so Emily will have something to work with.

FARMERS BRANCH ~ On the first night of Liberty Fest, U.S. Army First Lieutenant Robert F. Welch, III will be commemorated by the American Fallen Soldiers Project in a special ceremony at Liberty Plaza, a little more than a year after he was killed in action in Afghanistan at the age of 26.

U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant Robert F. Welch, III
|
Everyone is invited to the ceremony at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 25, when artist Phil Taylor will present a portrait of Lt. Welch to his family. Lt. Welch will be remembered as a father, husband, son, soldier and friend by many. However, by others in the Farmers Branch organization, he is remembered as "Robby," the good-natured kid with a smile on his face that worked at the Historical Park from 2004 to 2005 "He was a nice kid," said Historical Park Museum Educator Barbara Judkins. "At Texas History Alive, Robby was the one in the trailer hauling out the heavy stuff and always with a smile on his face. "He was in that trailer at the end of the day, too, loading stuff back up with the same demeanor even though he'd been on his feet all day talking to people. Patience is something a soldier must have and Robby had quite a bit."

Farmers Branch Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Harting remembered the delight Robby took in portraying historic characters during events. "I remember him as Colonel Travis," Mr. Harting said. "He took a lot of pride in his portrayal. Plus, it would be incredibly hot and he was happy in his wool coat and the rest of that hot, but authentic, uniform. "He was always polite. No matter how often we spoke, he always addressed me as 'sir.'" Historical Park Superintendent Derrick Birdsall remembered the transformation of a kid into a man. "I remember Robby as being a big, goofy kid who was always smiling and polite," he said. "I remember watching him get into ROTC and transform from an overweight teenager into a big, strong man, but he kept his smile and politeness. "I was in shock when I heard the news that he was killed in action. The image of Robby they had on TV, that is his induction picture at the end of boot camp, showed a leaner Robby, but he still had that smile and that mischievous glint in his eyes."
