Memo from the Manager

By Any Other Name

Shakespeare said "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."City Manager Gary D. Greer

Well, as Farmers Branch grows in reputation as the unofficial rose capital of north Texas, we're becoming increasingly aware that roses come by many different names. With the rose gardens at Gussie Field Watterworth Park and at the Farmers Branch Historical Park along with the veritable plethora of rose beds springing up around the City, the reputation seems to be gaining in popularity.

Rose show rose   Such is evidenced by the RoseDango event last weekend which drew rose enthusiasts from around the area to our City. Now, this weekend, the South Central District of the American Rose Society will draw rosarians and their roses from across Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas for their annual convention.

The highlight of this gathering will be their annual show, coming up this Saturday at the Farmers Branch Senior Center. It is free and open to the public from 12:45 to 3:45 p.m. Come see roses from far and wide as well as from right here in Farmers Branch where the experimental EarthKind roses were watered only three times during the brutal summer heat we endured earlier this year.

So, if you have a green thumb, a black thumb or if you are trying to develop a thumb, come see these champion roses and hear from the folks that make them grow.

For information on the Rose Gardens of Farmers Branch or how to grow roses in your yard, call 972.919.2625.

Indeed, with titles like Heirloom, David Austin, Floribunda, English Legend and Ramblers, roses do come by many different names - but, all smell as sweet.
