Memo from the Manager
Leadership at a Glance
Part of the job of a City Manager, in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the city, is to adjust to the personalities and leadership styles of Mayors and Council Members from election to election.
As this can be a fluid situation, there is no one way to work with elected officials.
During my 25, or so, years in the government business I have worked for 11 different Mayors and more than 70 Council Members. To be successful it has been critical to listen to elected officials and develop strategies to help them achieve their goals for the community.
In studying elected officials I have found that there are a few characteristics that make some more successful than others. Successful city leaders 1) know their community, 2) care deeply about the overall good for the community, 3) listen to all sides of issues, 4) support and encourage the staff and fellow elected officials 5) rise above politics, 6) work openly and honestly, 7) always consider the big picture, and 8) understand they are elected to enhance the lives of their citizens.
The people who exhibit these characteristics are the ones that accomplish the most for their communities. Since I have been in Farmers Branch I have noticed that the people who have run for Mayor have exhibited these qualities, which accounts for the city moving forward. Our recently-elected Mayor, Bill Glancy, has already shown all of these traits. In the short time he has been Mayor, I have been impressed with his leadership and ability to include people in his vision for the future. He is doing all the things a great Mayor should do to move a community forward and he daily shows how much he loves Farmers Branch with his actions, words and demeanor.
In short, he leads by example.
Mayor Glancy will continue to take Farmers Branch forward during the next three years and he will accomplish great things. Everyone should be excited about our future. Great things are coming and everyone is going to have a part in the success.

FARMERS BRANCH ~ With dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes on display for potential families, the Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center has followed its dramatic increase in traffic since opening in 2009 with a dramatic milestone, unheard of in many municipal facilities. For the past 12 months, the Farmers Branch facility has found homes for all adoptable dogs and cats, effectively achieving a 100 percent adoption

Farmers Branch Environmental Health Services Director Stacy Wright said the only animals that have been euthanized in the past year have been those deemed unadoptable due to illness, severe injury or behavioral issues. "The combination of city leadership, facility location, building design, local veterinarians, animal rescuers, and animal services staff is to thank for this level of achievement," Mr. Wright explained. "We especially appreciate all of the support that our animals get from the volunteers and the community." He added that the annual Bark in the Park event has been a great boost to adoption and responsible pet ownership and credited the non-profit animal care organization, Cause for Paws, founded by local animal advocate Judi Hacker, and Arfriend with director, Louise Henning for their constant support. Since its opening in 2009, the Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center has seen an explosion of walk-in traffic, spurred in part by its highly visible location on Valley View Lane between Brookhaven College and the Farmers Branch Justice Center. Farmers Branch Animal Services Manager Ethel Strother said the involvement of volunteers is imperative in helping animals to feel comfortable with people. "Many animals come into the facility scared, full of anxiety and might be put to sleep at many public shelters," she said. "However, through the socialization efforts of many wonderful volunteers, the animals frequently come out of their shells, become adoptable and make great pets." The state-of-the-art facility has capacity for up to 37 dogs and 31 cats. An interior "Get to Know" room and an outdoor courtyard enable prospective pet owners to become acquainted with their future pets on site, prior to completing the adoption process. For more information on adopting animals or on volunteering, call the center at 972.919.8770. The Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center is located at 3727 Valley View Lane and is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
