BRANCH BULLETIN ~ E-News from Farmers Branch

Memo from the Manager

 A long, hot (busy) summer

Even though kids are off for the summer months, the Mercury is already flirting with triple digits and things tend to slow down a bit, there's still plenty to do in Farmers Branch.

First, we have an event that was rescheduled because of severe weatherGary D. Greer last month. Bark in the Park will feature all manner of hot dogs and other things canine at the annual event on Sunday, June 12 at Gussie. The Manske Library's Summer Reading Club is underway with events and activities going on every week. Guests can get a firsthand opportunity to explore the natural surroundings of the John F. Burke Nature Preserve on Tuesday, June 14 with Master Naturalist Jim Varnum. Finally, the first of three summer Living History lectures at the Farmers Branch Historical Park will concentrate on the history of professional baseball in Fort Worth. Later sessions, in July and August, will focus on hall of fame bowling and cowgirls. With an eclectic mixture like that, this must be checked out.

   And, that's just June.

Through all of this the Don Showman Pool is open daily, Summer Funshine is in full swing and we're getting ready for the annual Independence Day festivities on July 3 with food, fun, music (Professor D) and, of course, fireworks.

So, if we're nearing 100 degrees in June, what will August be like?

Second time's the charm

Bark in the Park coming back to Gussie Sunday, June 12

FARMERS BRANCH ~ The festival of all things canine gets a second chance on Sunday, June 12 as "Bark in the Park" is planned from 12 noon until 5 p.m. at Gussie Field Watterworth Park, on Valley View Lane, near Farmers Branch City Hall.

The original event date in May was called off due to inclement weather and very wet conditions at the park.

Admission to the annual event is free and open to local pets and their people. It includes a silent auction, working dogs, therapy dogs, cat and dog adoptions, $10 microchipping, clowns and facepainting, children's games, concessions and more. Proceeds benefit the Farmers Branch Animal Adoption Center and its volunteer organizations. For more information, call 972.919.8770.

Guided nature walk at Burke set June 14

FARMERS BRANCH ~ The natural wonder of the John F. Burke Nature Preserve can be explored in detail on either of two upcoming guided nature walks, with Master Naturalist Jim Varnum, June 14.

The walk begins at 9 a.m. at the preserve, 1111 Valley View Lane,John F. Burke Nature Preserve Entry Signage between Luna Road and Interstate 635, and should last about one hour. These experiences are suitable for all ages. Sturdy shoes, for trails that could be muddy, are recommended. Cameras, bug spray and binoculars are also a good idea.

Mr. Varnum has already identified more than 200 species of plants in the preserve which is an excellent example of a bottomland forest and natural wetland area.

In addition to the indigenous plant life, nature walkers will also gander at wildflowers and the bird population.

The nature walk is free and open to the public. Call 972.919.2625 for more information.

"Three Strikes and You're Not Out," switches the topic from baseball to bowling as staff members from the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame in Arlington present the history of bowling on July 26.

Then, "The Cowgirl Legacy" will close out the series on August 30 with Diana Vela, Director of Exhibits and Education at the National Cowgirl Museum.   All lectures are free and begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Old Church on the Historical Park grounds. Call 972.406.0184 for more information.

Wet Works

As temperatures (in the, technically, late Spring) in June are already approaching the century mark, cooling down at the Don Showman Pool is always a positive option for Farmers Branch residents.
