Memo from the Manager
Springing Forward
It seems like, for once, the time change that happens this time of year has actually coincided with the change of seasons. Scarcely a month ago, we were breaking up thick ice covering our windshields and wading through six inches of snow to get to work. Now, Spring is literally in the air, with white buds from pear trees flying in the wind as the "greening" of our north Texas landscape appears to be in full swing.
There is no better time of year to be in Farmers Branch, to soak up the natural beauty of this "City in a Park" than right after the desolation of winter gives way to the eternal hope of spring. It is a wonderful time to take a stroll along Rawhide Creek, wander through the National Earthkind Rose Garden at Gussie Field Watterworth Park or to join us at the Farmers Branch Historical Park in celebration of a quarter century of their own history ... and to see how Derrick Birdsall is doing in the log cabin, without air conditioning, insulated windows or cable TV.
Whatever your preference, get out there and enjoy Farmers Branch in the springtime! Triple digits will be here soon enough. |

Catching Air ...
Farmers Branch Skate Park turns one amidst bursting popularity
FARMERS BRANCH ~ With one year, and a lot of air, under its belt, the Farmers Branch Skate Park continues to draw skaters and spectators to the fenced course near the Community Recreation Center at 14050 Heartside Place.
Rec Leader Gino Gotelli said an average of 20 to 40 skaters and spectators come to the park each day with many of them being repeat, or daily, users. "During the year, we've had people come from all over the Metroplex to skate the park," Gino said. "The park usually fills up for 'Film Me Fridays' when we film those who want to show their skills, then edit them together for YouTube."
When daily skaters were asked what the park means to them, they were adamant in their answers. "Paradise," said Kevin Castro. "It's the funnest thing by my house." Jacob Gomez said he likes "everything" about the park. "It reminds me of skating the streets."
Skaters can look forward to new equipment coming to the park in the near future, to include an extension to the "mini" deck, a three-foot bank to quarter transfer, an "A" rail and a pole jam (described as a rail extending diagonally from the ground).
The Farmers Branch Skate Park is open every day from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Celebrating 25 |
As the Farmers Branch Historical Park celebrates its 25th Anniversary, it seemed appropriate for the banner to bear the image of the iconic Railroad Depot with celebratory fireworks bursting above it. Although, there were not actually fireworks involved in the celebration (the photo was taken a few Fourth of Julys ago), the imagery seemed to set the mood. The celebration continues through April 1. See the schedule of events below.
