PASTOR'S PEN
Dear Friends,
Recently, I have been rereading a classic text in Christian spirituality, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a' Kempis. Written in the 15th century, it is often regarded as the most widely read spiritual work of all time, next to the Bible itself. The truth of this work makes for terrific devotional material. For instance, in a recent moment of reflection, I was encouraged and directed by these words on the subject of "Works Done in Charity." As a' Kempis said,
Without charity external work is of no value, but anything done in charity, be it ever so small and trivial, is entirely fruitful inasmuch as God weighs the love with which a person acts rather than the deed itself. He does much who loves much. He does much who does a thing well. He does well who serves the common good rather than his own interests.

As I read these words, I immediately thought of our new Redemption Store and skateboard area. Countless hours of prayer, work, thought, and resources have been poured into these new endeavors, and while those who provide such servant leadership would rather not take any public credit, it is clear that they have done much. And if a' Kempis was right (and I believe that he was), then they have done much for the simple reason that they have loved much. This is proof once again that our mutual commitment to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves is the sort of thing that can change the world (Mt. 22:37-38). It really is the greatest commandment!
And so it is with great expectation that we celebrate the opening of our new Redemption Store this month and continue to pray through the construction and development of our evolving skateboard ministry. It is so good to see dreams and visions come to reality! I trust you will join me in praying for God's wisdom and guidance as we seek to share the love of Jesus through these new platforms of outreach and connection. As children of Abraham and as servants of Christ the King, we look forward to exercising our role and responsibility to be a blessing to others in the community.
So let us continue to 'serve the common good.' No doubt we will be blessed along the way!
Love much!
Darren

A Different Road
You know how when you go to the doctor or dentist and they ask you to describe your discomfort on a scale of 1 to 10? Do you find that as difficult to answer as I do? If it hurts, it hurts. Pain is pain. I don't know how much more or less it could hurt. I can't put a number on it any more than I could put a number on the level of my faith. Faith is faith, right? Yes, of course it can grow and unfortunately circumstances may cause it to wane. All I can say for sure is that I have more than I used to, but still not as much as I should. How much faith does it take?
Does it take a certain level of faith to reach redemption and a place in heaven? I don't think so. If you are saved how can you become more saved? I know this sounds silly, but we worry about this sometimes. I know I have.
If we believe and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ to save us, we do in fact have faith. Jesus said, "Don't be troubled. You trust God, now trust in me" (John 14:1). In John 20:29-31, we read these words of assurance: so Jesus said, "You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who haven't seen me and believe anyway". Jesus' disciples saw him do many other miraculous signs besides the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life. What do we believe? I have heard folks say that sometimes they don't know whether they really believe or are simply going through the motions. My good brother, Jim Bowers, would tell you that it's not what you believe, it's what you believe with. The brain is for "stinking thinking" and true belief takes place in the heart where the Holy Spirit resides.
When we become able to hear and follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we develop a closer relationship with God and others and we also grow spiritually. Those doubts that hang around our brain originate from the evil one and you can seriously limit his influence by feeding the Holy Spirit with your love for God and others. I found my answer by taking a different road much as the three kings did to avoid King Herod when leaving Bethlehem.
With the help of my Christian community, the different road I chose was the road to Emmaus. It opened my eyes to God's love and to my need to love others. A short time later, the Bible study, "Experiencing God", opened my heart to the gentle guidance of the Holy Spirit. The journey continues and it's not simply a journey, it's a blessing.

MATAMOROS CHILDREN'S HOME
It is with sadness that we write to inform you of the end of our work here. This has been a most rewarding service to the Lord, but a devastating winter for this program as a result of the current state of affairs in Mexico. Because of the dangers of traveling in their country, we have been unable to even visit the children.
In December we gave all the toys, clothes, shoes, fabric, curtains and toiletries to local charities for Christmas. We still have beds for ten children and four computers that we will make one last attempt to get across the border. Thanks to the Caleb class and each of you for your prayers and past financial support. We will continue to support them financially, but will not be able to work there or visit until conditions change.
On a personal note, we have sold our home here in Texas and will move back to Pensacola full time the first of March. Next year will be a real adventure for us, as we have never spent a winter in Pensacola. It has not been easy for us to make the decision, as this mission project has been our passion for many years; however, we believe God is leading us and we will follow whatever plan he has for us.
The Matamoros Children's Home is hurting financially because of the economy here and the violence there. Volunteers are hesitant to visit or work on the campus. Please keep them forever in your prayers. God Bless.
