The Lake Mills Arts Center and Eli Wedel Photo & Design are teaming up to give Lake Mills one of her best birthday gifts ever. Starting August 1st, you can submit your favorite past and/or present photo(s) of people, places, events and other happenings in and of Lake Mills to Eli at his studio. Whether you search in your attic for photos, or you have recent images, as long as they can be identified as "Lake Mills" they can be submitted and will be displayed in a huge photo mosaic at the Lake Mills Arts Center. A smaller, poster-size mosaic will be available for purchase that weekend. The photo show will be open to the public for viewing on Saturday, September 3rd, and Sunday, September 4th from noon-5pm. Quilt Entries Needed
|

A Quilt Show at the Middle School Gym is being planned as one of the festivities for the 175th Celebration. Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend, quilts will be set up at the Middle School to view.
Do you have a quilt (or two or three) that you would like to display? This will not be a juried show - just a chance to display quilts that were made in Lake Mills ~ or just live in Lake Mills right now. Heck, we will take quilts from anywhere in Jefferson County if you're interested in displaying it.
Quilts can be new, old or in-between. The most fragile of the antique quilts will most likely be displayed on a bed, and several "Bed Turnings" will be scheduled throughout the two days.
If you would like to show your quilt, please download the application. One application/entry form per quilt please. We do require a 4" sleeve on the back of each quilt for hanging.
Application deadline: August 1, 2011. Admission to view the quilts at the Quilt Show is FREE. We will also be hosting tables of Lake Mills memorabilia as well as information about Rock Lake, sponsored by the Rock Lake Improvement Association, in the cafeteria.
Oh - and did we mention that the Middle School is air-conditioned?? |

Lake Mills Cheese, Please Recipe Contest
|
Lake Mills Cheese, Please Recipe Contest Presented by Crystal Farms Cheese Lake Mills is legendary for its mysterious Rock Lake, its scenic bike trail, its historic state park, and its picturesque downtown. But it's Lake Mills' rolling hills, bucolic pastureland, and the Crystal Farms Cheese packaging plant that have established the community's long-standing and enthusiastic cheese heritage. As Lake Mills commemorates its 175th anniversary, Crystal Farms Cheese is proud to present the Lake Mills Cheese, Please Recipe Contest, a contest that will celebrate a town where residents are proud of their cheese and that will crown one lucky participant Lake Mills' Cheesiest. Participants in the Lake Mills Cheese, Please Recipe Contest Presented by Crystal Farms Cheese will enter a recipe in any of three categories: - Hot cheese dips/fondues
- Cold cheese balls/spreads
- Macaroni and cheese
Recipes will be judged on four criteria, including taste, texture, appearance and creativity by a panel of judges including Russ Roedl with Crystal Farms Cheese; Brett Olstadt, executive chef at Madison's Restaurant Muramoto; and Ed Grunden, president of the Lake Mills City Council. A first, second and third place winner will be named in each category, and one individual will be named Grand Champion-Lake Mills' Cheesiest. All winners will receive a ribbon and a Cheese, Please t-shirt. In addition, third place winners will receive a discount coupon for a future Crystal Farms cheese purchase; second place winners will receive a six-month supply of Crystal Farms cheese; and first place winners will receive a one-year supply of Crystal Farms cheese. This event is free and open to the public. Enter to win or just come enjoy the festivities, which begin at Noon on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Gazebo in Commons Park. Please click here for more information.

Welcome Lewis Station Winery!!
|
The much-anticipated Lewis Station Winery opened their doors on July 1, and we could not be more excited! The formerly forlorn corner of Main and Madison has been transformed into the newly relocated retail outlet of The Wine Vineyard, as well as a 99-seat tasting room/theatre, an outdoor wine garden, and the new home of Rob's Lewis Station Winery label.

Destination - Lake Mills, WI
|

Coming soon, we have TWO new antique stores opening up in Lake Mills!
Mill Pond Antiques and Legendary Antiques, both opening later this month, will share the corner of Main and Lake Streets - the storefront recently vacated by The Wine Vineyard. Mill Pond Antiques will have the front of the store, and Legendary Antiques will be in the old Tasting Room, facing Lake Street. Once the new location for Mill Pond Antiques has been completely renovated (watch the progress just west of Jensen Plumbing and Heating), Legendary Antiques will take over the entire store on the corner of Main and Lake Streets. Welcome to you both - we are looking forward to two more fantastic stores that help Lake Mills enhance our reputation as a Destination Location!

Pie Contest Winners
|
The 4th Annual Main Street Pie Baking Contest was a great success again this year. The contest, sponsored by the law offices of Neuberger, Wakeman, Lorenz, Griggs & Sweet, had homemade pies entered in four different categories, and were auctioned off after the winning pies were announced.
 | | Kris Paape - she can barely hold all of her ribbons! |
The Grand Champion and the Reserve Champion winner ribbons both went to last year's Grand Champion winner, Kris Paape of Waterloo. Paape's "Hunka Hunka Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Cream Elvis Pie" won the Grand Champion ribbon as well as winning the Cream Pie category.
The Reserve Champion pie was Blueberry Almond Crumble Pie and this pie also won in the Fruit Pie category.
 | | Katie Paape |
Winning in the "Other" category was Stephanie Bruns of Kenosha. Her entry was a Buttermilk Chess Pie. In the Kids' category, Katie Paape followed in her mother's footsteps by winning first place with her Raspberry Chocolate Chunk Cheese Pie.
Milwaukee radio and TV personality (and unabashed fan of Lake Mills) Gino Salamone was once again our auctioneer. Judging the pies were Anne Jackson, Seth Habhegger, Sue Haviland, Kristin Cramer and Mark Sweet. Pie contest volunteers included Katie Otto, Heather Kent and Amanda Thompson.

Death by Chocolate Winners
|
Six delicious chocolate concoctions were given first place honors at the 3rd Annual Death by Chocolate baking contest held during the Lake Mills Farmers' Market on June 8. The entries were grouped into categories for cakes, cookies, brownies, bars, kids and "other." The Grand Champion award was given to Susan Drager, for her amazing Flourless Chocolate Marble Cake. Drager's dessert also won first place in the cake category. The Reserve Champion ribbon went to Brooke Behm. Her winning recipe was for Chocolate Cherry Coke Cupcakes. Behm also won the kids' category with her recipe. The other winners were Alise Sjostrom for her Rax-Express Chocolate Cookies, Janice Tubbs for Black Forest Brownies, Noelle Burns for Creamy Orange Chocolate Truffle Bars, and Viviane Henaux for her Chocolate and Pear Charlotte. The difficult job of judging these entries went to courageous taste-testers Sue Haviland, Brad Glassel, Kevin Hicks and Kristi Wendt. Serving as auctioneer was Steve Bower. Lewis Station Winery sponsored this event. The entries were auctioned off after the winners were announced, with half of the proceeds going to the Lake Mills Main Street Program and half to the baker. The entry with the highest bid was Viviane Henaux for her Chocolate and Pear Charlotte. | | Susan Drager - Grand Champion |
