News from the WISCONSIN UNION THEATER

Greetings!

Please come show your support for the Wisconsin Union Theater by attending the Public Forum on Tuesday, August 30 at 5:30 pm in Memorial Union (check TITU for location).

You may have noticed that the Memorial Union Reinvestment project has received some heat in the press lately regarding the proposed Theater Lounge addition and its impact on the Terrace.  There is a small but vocal group that has voiced concerns about the Theater Lounge and about the needs of the Theater. This group is likely to have a strong showing at this meeting.

We encourage everyone who cares about Memorial Union, the Terrace, and the Theater to attend the public meeting tomorrow to ask questions and to learn more about the project.

We want to be sure that there are people at the meeting who know and understand the value of the Theater. If you use the space to perform and/or you attend events at the theater, please come to the meeting and speak out. It is helpful for people to know:

  • The theater is in high demand and gets used frequently by a variety of groups.
  • For many groups, it is the only suitable space on campus to hold events.
  • Many people love the theater and place high value on that space.
  • It is a historical theater in which numerous great artists & others have performed or spoken.

Please also be aware of the following facts about the proposed Theater Lounge:

  • The lounge is a multi-use space that serves as a much-needed pre- and post-function space but its primary use will be as a lounge for students and Union Members.
  • The lounge will provide seating with beautiful views of Lake Mendota throughout the entire year, allowing for Terrace-like seating in winter.
  • A public seating area on the roof of the Theater Lounge will add a new vantage point for looking at the Lake and watching the sunset.
  • The number of Terrace seats will increase, not decrease, thanks to additional seats in the lounge.

More information about the Memorial Union Reinvestment is available here:  http://www.unionreinvestment.wisc.edu/index.html

If you have any questions about the meeting, the use of the theater, or the Theater Lounge addition, please contact the project office by e-mailing designcommittee@union.wisc.edu.

Thank you for your support of the Wisconsin Union Theater. We hope to see you at the Public Forum!
